I have a new RRA DEA model AR and need to get an optic for it. I have not used either Aimpoint sight but was curious as to what advantages the M3 has over the Micro if any? Would you get the Micro or the M3? Thanks.

CompM* models are designed for really hard use. I'm not familiar with the control layout/features of the Micro, but I cannot imagine them being able to survive the abuse a CompM2,3,4 can take.

I would, and did, get the Comp C3 with the two minute-of-angle reticule.

It's bacially the same as the Comp M3, though it's not waterproofed to the same depth (five meters vs. forty-five, I believe). That wasn't an issue for me. For one thing, I live in a desert. For another, I can't swim, so if I'm in sixteen feet of water it means I've drowned.

The big difference is price. The Comp C3 can be had for $388 from the above link, whereas the Comp M3 runs $466-$519, depending on whether or not you need night vision settings. If there's any significant difference in durability (aside from the waterproofing depth) between the C3 and M3, I've yet to discover it. Aimpoint makes a good product, period.

coronach, you might be surprised. the micro T1 is pretty solid, and gets my vote

Vortex Optics is coming out with something called the StrikeFire. It's a 2X red dot that will be about 150 bucks. If it is as good as everything else Vortex puts out, it will blow the AimPoint and Eotech stuff out of the water.

I shot one of the micros today..I'm not familiar enough with it to give any real advice on durability, but it was a great little sight. Since I'm always trying to pare a little weight off my rifle, I'd consider one. Seems like they're a good alternative if you're going to use a magnafier.

If you're looking for an inexpensive red dot, that's not "cheap," look at the S.P.O.T. MKIII red dot. It can be had NIB for $150. I read a post somewhere where a guy tested his, to see what it would take to break it. Appearently he broke his rifle trying to break the scope.

I'm not saying you're shopping with price in mind... but if you are...

A Bushmaster Carbon 15 Type R21 rifle with a Micro and a 20rd PMag would make for an awesomely light rifle, methinkith...
