This is my view and experience with the SA XD after 12 months of ownership, i have had it longer than that but this is a eval report to the 12 month mark. everyone that is interested in a xd should read this and i have done this to help out others, to take all the work out it for other people i give the facts only!

SA XD .40 service model. bought july 2005.

Reliability
1) After 2110rds the pistol has had zero malfunctions that were to no fault of the gun itself.
2)There were a total of 4 reloads that were not fully charged and did not cycle the slide completly, this was reloads only no factory ammo ever did that.
3) There was one squib rd that left the rd half way down the barrel, but again this was a reload. the squib rd caused no problems to the gun in any way.

Rounds used
Jhp's of every make and model almost.
hornaday xto's
fed htdra-shocks
win 180gr jhp's
rem golden sabers
speer gold dots, and more
180gr pmc fmj
lead swc reloads
lead ball reloads
rem umc 180gr fmj
wwb 165gr fmj
fmj reloads 165gr rainier
american agle 165gr fmj
blaser brass 180gr fmj
others i am forgeting right now
all performed and feed wonderfully!

Shootability
1)The trigger has gotten near perfect, and better by the 1k of rds.
2)I love the three dot sights, they are quick for me and allow me to get on target and engage fast but accuratly at the same time!
A) would like night sights upgrade in the future.
B) front sight dirties pretty quickly, white stuff is comming off, and has became a little dull, but is still easy to pick up especially at the range on a sunny day!
3)The xd feels the best of any handgun to me on the market. fits me absolutly perfect.
4) magazines work perfect and i have had never ever had a mag problem, all 4 of mine are factory mags.

Durability
1)no breakage of parts, inside or out.
2)no cracks to frame. it might be plastic but it's tuff!:)
3)there is normal wear on the weapon, but nothing that i believe is out of the ordinary, not because the xd's have a poor finish, all guns wear over time no matter what.
A) wear on slide around muzzle, front sight blade, down both sides to approx. the ejetion port area. slide lever, and palm safety.
B) though there is wear you have to look to really see it.
4)After 1 year + of shooting, carrying, and geting banged around here and there and being an all around work horse i am very pleased.

Accuracy
1) After many many rds and practice my shooting has gotten much better not only with this but all other handguns in general.
2) i have achieved impressive groups in all cqb drills and shooting that i do.
A)double tap drills
B)rapid fire drills
C)quick fire drills etc.
3)The XD is very contralable with all types of ammo fmj's, jhp's etc.
4)I don't remeber the last time i had a flyer or a rd land outside the 9 ring or 5 ring depending on what targets i am using.
5) I have gotten really good at 3-15yds and really want to get better at 25yds, and want to do some 50yd shots for just fun.

conclusion
1) i am very pleased and i think everyone will be. i have nothing at all to complain about. Hope this helps. if it only helps one person in the search for a great weapon, and i will be happy.sorry so long but those are the facts!

Thank for the report on your XD. I would say that your hooked know. You need to get a 45acp next.

If another xd is in the future, it will be in .40 cal,the whole same magazines, and use the same holster thing. if i do get another it probally will be the ported model! They are pretty sweet!

I have the XD9 and have shot about 1200 rounds threw it and it is flawless. I have been shooting at 7 and 12 yard distances and the accuracy is excelent. I shot at 25 yards while using bench rest and 11 out of 15 rounds where in the 10 zone.

I am very pleased with the XD9, since I bought XD9 I have not wanted to fire my S&W 910S 9mm. The 910 is a sweet gun but I really enjoying the XD.

i ahve an xd 45 with just over 1k rounds through it and fully agree with you. when i first got it paper looked like swiss cheese but getting good groupings now and getting better al the time

I've put just over 4000 round's through my XD45 Tactical, & still can't find any reason's what-so-ever to get rid of it!

Had wonderful experiences with the 4" XD .45. Shot as accurately as a Sig 220 I used to have (still kicking myself for letting that one go). Just got a .45 tactical in bi-tone. I am VERY excited about going to shoot this one:D ....as soon as I can get to the range, that is. :(

I have an XD .45 Tactical and it is my favorite. You know how you get with your favorite piece? No one shoots it or handles it but me. You can try out whatever else I have but my ....precious....

Out of the four handguns ive looked at in general people say the xd would be the best as a first, im glad to see such a positive review on it :).

Just shot my XD45 service fo rthe first time today, and it functioned flawlessly. The only thing is the trigger is a little to heavy for my taste; I am used to my 1911. I am hopeing that after I use it more that it will lighten or that I will just stop noticing. I might send it off for a trigger job if I ever get some extra dough.

Also I am making a record of every round I shoot through it (date, grains, type, ect). So far I have fired 5.93 pounds of metal down range. :)

My roommate just bought an XD .40 cal 4 inch. I only shot two mags worth from it, 24 rounds, and he fired quite a few, I think together we burned through 3 boxes. We were both pulling to the left a bit, is this a common problem? The only complaint I have is that its DAO, and I really like the SA/DA option. However, I could get over that minor snag, since its such a nice weapon. I think a five inch XD may be my next handgun purchase, after I get a nice revolver...

Although I've only put 100 rounds in my XD-9 ported, I can say that so far I'm very pleased with it, and look forward to continual practice. Thanks for the report.

I have though hard about one of the xd .40 cal, ported models. I am still on the fence about it, but I think it would be pretty darn sweet!

Let's talk about that worthless XD you have

Less than $500, fires as long as you're holding it, mine is the 4" .40 variety... It has some body sweat induced rust all over the slide. I rarely take care of it, and trust it with my life every day. That XD is rusting on my back right now, but I believe that it will put countless rounds down range.

I love fancy, complicated pieces of engineering; I'm an engineer. But this ugly, almost as ugly as G**ck products, make me question my previously held notions. I have grown up and grown old talking about the functionality of tools. This is one of those few tools that I can't find a reason to hate. So, buy an XD if you want a firearm you can abuse, mistreat, take for granted, and trust your life on.

IANAL

scared once,
Welcome to THR
at the beginning of your post i was thinking oh no this hates the xd how do i reply, but by the end i realised that you are obviously just very passoniate about the xd and you sure know how to show it! glad to have you aboard and glad to see another happy xd owner!

Buy one, there's hardly any muzzle flip, and recoil is almost unnoticeable, at least for me. It's a little louder, but I think I would like it better than a non-ported model (I have not fired a non-ported XD).

Check out this thread about the ported Glocks, some good info from arizona about the benefit of ported models.

XD 40

I've owned my XD 40 since 2002, flawless pistol!:D I've got close to 1000 rounds out of mine, its been 100% reliable and accurate. The XD fits my hand great, feels great in my hand, its really conducive to accurate shooting. You can count me in as an XD fan.:D
