Some years ago, my wife suffered a ruptured aneurysm in her brain, and I took an early retirement to care for her. It was tough at first. She was in pretty bad shape, and just sat and stared at the TV for some months. The doctors told me that was normal for her injury...Just keep working with her. Time was her best medicine now. Still, there got to be times when I was going stir crazy being cooped up in the house with her. We lived way out in the country then and our nearest neighbors wouldn't have cared it I shot a howitzer off the porch. I thought about just plinking with 22, but I was afraid the noise might upset my wife.
Then I remembered the Red Ryder. On a trip to Wal-Mart one day I picked one up along with BB's and such. I kept it next to the front door. From then on when I wanted to scream, I'd step out on the front porch, with the windows open so I could see/hear her, (and so she'd know where I was.) and I'd plink away at a few cans I had tossed onto the front yard. Lord, did that help ease the anxiety. I don't know how many BB's I shot but I'll bet a metal detector would blow your ears off if you walked over that yard. Praise the Lord for that simple, cheap little BB gun. I later graduated to a break action pellet rifle with a scope, but the Red Ryder was the most fun.
Oh, and to end on a happy note, she did get better. Her brain healed and now she's almost as sassy as she used to be. She tells people "What do you expect? I'm brain damaged, and I've got the pictures to prove it." I tell them, "I'm brain damaged. I caught it from her."
