Found, Winchester 630, W630

Yeah I know, that's redundant but will make searching easier, anywho.
I find I'm the owner of a can of Win 630 powder, could I use it in a 357mag Marlin, a 32mag SSM, 45acp, 7.62x25 or 7.62x39? So far all I could find was a little info on use in the 357 for revolver use, would like to know what use it was made for.

BTW thanks to all who have posted info on Win571 powder as I now have 8 pounds of the stuff.

Interesting find. WW630 was similar to Unique in burning rate and was agreat powder powder to load 45ACP's with 230 gr FMJ ammo. However, WW630 powder has been discontinued for at least 20 years! At this point I wouldn't consider using it at all, especially if the can was opened previously snd the contents have startred to oxidize. Throw it in your flower garden, it will make an excellent nitorgen fertilizer.

I wonder if the can is worth more then the powder to someone that collects them? And knowing how shooters are, I bet someone does. lol

Can had never been opened, smells right, sadly its also rusty on the outside only and faded so no collector value. Had two cans of 680 but vandals ruined them.

Hornady Manual #2 from 1973 has some 630 data. The primers and bullets they tested are often not the same or no longer available. They used 630 powder in 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 44 Special, 44 Magnum, and 45 Colt. No other calibers tested with 630 in this old manual.

Hornady 3rd also has some data for Win 630 powder in 41 Mag, 44 Special, 44 Rem Magnum, 45 LONG COLT, 444 Marlin rifle, and no other calibers.
Use this info carefully with your old powder especially when using different bullet brands or primers. Start low and work up.

My Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd edition from 1986 has some data for 630 powder with cast lead bullets. It appears that Win 630 is a relatively slow burning pistol powder that may be too slow for .45ACP and 32Mag. It is used for cast lead bullet loads for some rifle calibers in the Lyman Cast bullet manual. Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd printing says, " Winchester 630- A moderately slow but high-energy pistol powder which is also very effective in cast bullet rifle loads."

Here's the Winchester manual data published in 1975 that has 630 data for most handgun rounds.

No reason not to use this powder, remember that the loads listed are maximum. 35 years ago it was expected that hand loaders knew enough to reduce listed charges by 10% and had the math skills to calculate that start load.

And being old powder extra caution is warranted.
My days of loading hot are long behind me, never was much interested in pushing my luck, spose that's from starting reloading shotshells first.

the reason 630 was dropped was that it was very temperature sensitive. it isn't interchangable with 630P. H-110 does everything that 630 would do without all of the problems. Winchester also dropped 230 , 295 and other versions of these for the same reason.

Still Shooting It

I bought about 10 lbs of it from a dealer who was closing out in about 1983. I have about 2-3 lbs left, and am still shooting it with good results in 357, 44 mag, and 30 carbine. I don't go for max velocity, just accurate loads & fun shooting. I use it in lead & jacketed loads, and have the 1976 edition of the Winchester loading guide (same loads were in the 1973, so the 75 edition is almost certainly the same).

I used a lot of it back in the seventies. One reason it was discontinued was the burn rate was such that when used in revolvers, it would severely erode the back of the barrels by the cylinder gap. When used in closed type barrels, single shots and semi-autos, it was a great powder. That fact cost me a re-barrel by Ruger for my superblackhawk.

If it was stored properly, there's no reason it won't work. I'm using surplus powder that's twice as old as that 630.
