Bring me up to date, I haven't shot Long Range in some time.

On Baen's Bar there was a link to the usual inane YouTube oohing and aahing over the Hungarian GM6 Lynx Bullpup .50 BMG (or 12.7mm) long recoil semiautomatic.
https://gm6lynx.com/

To which a couple of Barflies commented:

"At 1k, with standard Ball or Tracer, I can put 5 rounds into a head size target, with a 20 power scope and depending on weather conditions and all the other considerations,"

"He complains about the accuracy, but a well trained Marksman could likely make four inch groups at a thousand meters with standard ball"

Really? With ball ammo?

Heard at gun store, customer had taken a riflery course from an instructor who could demonstrate and teach hitting a 4" plate at 1000 yards. No doubt real target or precision gun and ammo, but how often?

Watch Texas Plinking on YouTube. The first challenge is hitting a 10” gong at 1000 yards within 10 shots. If they hit that target, they get to try for the 5” gong. Very few shooters hit the second one and that’s with match ammo and some pretty exotic weaponry.

i have pulled targets in hipower pits for high masters that could do that at 600 yards. dedicated shooter with dedicated ammo. edited to add, not with issue ball ammo for any rifle though. fwiw.

So have I. But not in accordance with Case 1, a military weapon with ball ammo. Case 2, a few days of class. Both at 1000 yards.

From what I have heard anything is possible in gun stores, bars and anyplace fishermen hang out.
This is @ 600 yards and not ball ammo; there is a world of difference between 600 & 1000. The 15th shot took out wooden spindle placed in the 14th bullet hole.

I watched a friend recently spinning a yarn at the range about his 9mm pistol upper at 100 yards and telling some other dude that he could put all his shots in a 1" group. I was there for that, and it was more like a 5 inch circle- after fudging for fliers! Of course, I just nodded and said nothing, even when the guy was like "With a 9mm?!" It wasn't my job to serve as that guys BS meter, but it did take some willpower to keep quiet!

Lotta storytellers everywhere. The older you get, the easier it is- or at least should be- to discern nonsense from something that might be truth.
