Foxnews Alert: Gunman on VA Tech campus

EC-10

Totally aware of VT's email alert system. I also know that it only works if one checks your email in a timely and in this case, fortuitous manner.

And, the campus cops aren't responsible for anybody's safety. That's been upheld, many times, by the Supreme Court.

Bottom line is simple. There's no way a small force of campus and local police are going to be able to protect 2600 acres filled with hundreds of buildings and tens of thousands of people.

Also, mass notification via email, etc, is not gonna reach everybody in time to stay the hell away.

Nobody can predict when, and where, a mass murder is going to occur. Not unless you're in some sort of "Minority Report" alternative universe.

He possessed the guns illegally if he was on a student visa according to this article from Feb 1st.

HOUSTON: A Pakistani student that United States authorities said had ties to a terrorist plot to aid the Taliban was convicted on Tuesday on a gun charge. Shiraz Syed Qazi, 26, was found guilty of one count of possession of a firearm by an alien during a brief trial conducted by US District Judge Lee Rosenthal. Qazi waived his right to a jury trial.

Under federal law, a non-immigrant with a student visa, such as Qazi, is not permitted to hold firearms or ammunition.

That is true, except they fail to mention that a Non-Immigrant Alien, such as a Valid Student Visa holder, only needs to acquire a Valid Hunting License and remain a Resident of a US State for 90 consecutive days in order to Purchase and Possess firearms legally. And yes, even though it requires a Hunting License, they can then buy all the Self Defense weaponry they want.

I have no idea if this applies in the VT shooting, but in general, simply because a person is in the US on a Student Visa does NOT mean that they cannot legally possess firearms. They do need to take that extra step though, of getting a Hunting License, to make it legal.

Futuristic

That's the point that we have to make offensively and not allow the anti's to try and create more defenseless people.

Exactly! So many just don't get it! You can't carry a cop. :banghead:

I heard about this on the radio (after work about 4:00ish), naturally Richard Daley had to chime in saying (paraphrasing, can't find a transcript) "... I don't care if you're on the left or the right, there are too many guns in this country, and children have too easy access to them." I can't really recall the exact sentence structure, but he definately referenced children.

Must blame be assessed somewhere for everything! The ONLY one to blame for today's shootings is the guy who was pulling the trigger this morning. He's dead . . . end of story.

Could it have been prevented? Unlikely, but ever so remotely possible if a legally sanctioned CCW carrier was around AND circumstances set up just right for him/her to take the shooter down at some point.

There are probably 2 million posts on news media forums blaming Bush and the NRA. Horse manure!

There are 300 million people in this nation and about 5 billion on the planet. There are some who would blame Bush for anything bad happening to any of those folks. Sure it's easy to get all torqued about these people's rants, but not worth it - don't. You're not going to convert a rabid anti by dwelling in their sewer.

The more of us who keep to the HIGH ROAD in debating RKBA publicly at this time will make clearer to reasonable folks who are on the fence about gun control which position is the most sane. It's also better for the blood pressure.

I read a wonderful thread here recently [and aploigize for not remembering the member who posted it] where a THR member who was in the military and is now a "late" blooming college student brought some other younger students to a range for their first experiences with guns. It was overwhelmingly positive and I really think efforts like that would resound with a much wider audience among college students after today.

Any CCW instructors out there willing to give free (or reduced price) classes to college students seeking their CCW? I live in a college town and will be getting my instructor certification and doing just that with as much free time as my job and 3 kids allow. The fishing's been off this spring anyhow.;)

ART

O'Reilly says he was a 24 year old Chineese national who was here on a student visa and not part of a terror group.

I am suprised Bill did not call him a wetback illegal immigrant. If Bill said it then I would take it with a grain of salt. This guy will stop at nothing to push is personal agenda.

The university has a wireless PA system installed after the double homicide at the beginning of this school year that is used for emergency broadcast.

I love this talk of banning the high cap magazines......
My question is if the killer did line up 33 people against the wall and start shooting.......why wouldnt most in line(after seeing the first two people getting shot) rush the gunman?

Am I out of line for asking this??

Interesting bit of sluething...

... snip...

Like I said, I had come across this guy's info, etc. on other forums, and thought it was relivant.

Apparently he's posted to his journals that it's not him. Kind of a truism huh? Since the "him" could not post...

Anyway, go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Taken out of context.

The only survivor I've heard give an account said he walked into the class room and just started shooting. Nobody was lined up... at least not in that instance.

Because this is a false rumor. He just walked into the classrooms and shot people in their seats. All they could do was dive to the floor and try to hide. He didn't line anyone up against any walls.

No sh*t! BUT news is huge $$$$$ business and this is now a media event that will keep them buzzing, blaming and speculating for days! Sadly, there will be a movie, books, etc. Probably somebody is already working on it. If the are, shame on them!! :fire:

I heard that the shooters name was Cho and that he bought the guns legally from a shop in the area.

MonkeyGun ... that's not the guy. You should take those links down and stop spreading rumors.

I've been poking around various forums, and have managed to find someone that I hope is not the guy...

Considering that this guy logged onto his Live Journal account within the last 3 hours, I doubt that he's a dead mass killer.

Besides, anyone who loves Mosin Nagants that much can't be bad.

I want to party with that guy. He looks like a lot of fun. :)

The expert they just had on Fox News was great!!!

Emphasized the gun is just a tool and that the lethality remains primarily with the shooter.

Bingo. He looked like the most competent "firearms expert" I've ever seen on a News Channel

Considering that LEO has not released a name, etc. I don't see how you could know that it's not the guy... Unless you know it's not the guy. Do you?

Besides, it's not like I'm saying it is him, I'm simply saying that there's an awful lot of forums that seem to be pointing that way, and he's certainly an interesting "profile".

Besides, anyone that has a Xanga site, a livejournal site, etc. is not someone I'm all that worried about intruding in on his privacy...

Intrusion on one's privacy and posting links to his profiles connecting him to the worst mass shooting in US history are two VERY different things.

Because he's alive enough to post:

Coming out. I am not the shooter. Through this experience, I have received numerous death threats, slanderous accusations, and my phone is out of charge from the barrage of calls. Local police have been notified of the situation.

My original intention was to wait until I got AdSense on my site and donating all the proceeds to Charity. However, this situation has now spiraled out of control. I am now confirming that I am not the shooter. I will be available for interview by a news agency to clear my name, talk about the experience, and give my opinion on how the situation could have turned out better if other students were allowed to be armed. I will only speak with individuals who are interested in donating to charities resulting from today's events. Please e-mail all correspondence to [email protected]
