Like some of you, I receive solicitations for donations from various police organizations throughout the year. I usually donate to them all (which is probably why I get so many letters!) but my wife is about to be laid off, so I find I must be bit more selective, or give less to all.

I just a received a letter from the Fraternal Order of Police. From what I have read they seem to be reasonable on 2A issues - any comments before I send them a check? Any members here?

Thanks,
Jonathan

before you send them ANY money, make sure that it's actually them and not a fund-raising company. I get those calls all the time and when I ask, "how much of this money is actually going to the po-po and how much are you keeping?" the answer is usually (after you ask the 3rd or 4th time) around 90% is kept by the telemarketer, and 10% goes to the charity. :(

I'm a member. My FOP lodge is definitly in favor of protecting the citizens right to keep and bear arms. Some members teach safety classes for CCW. Can't speak for all the others lodges.

With that said, if your wife is close to getting laid off, hang onto that money for a while. If things turn out to be rough, you'll need it worse that the FOP. If things go well for you, you can reconsider your donation later.

Until then, your family will be in my prayers.

Respectfully,

DarkSoldier

Most of them are scams, I've found.

"Advertise in our magazine!"

"Send me a copy, along with some publication numbers, I don't advertise in anything I haven't seen."

"Well, we can't send you one unless you advertise (or the adverse) "We only send them to members."

"Bye."

Most of those organizations have nothing to do with law enforcement. They use scare tactics to get money out of people. They don't get any of mine.

I don't care who it is or what they claim the donations are for, I just tell them I do not send money to strangers who call on the phone. You don't know what sort of address of convenience a swindler might use.

Retired cop and fop here.
Those calls are NOT from your local police and ususally we only got 25 % of anything they raised.
If you want to give to your LOCAL PD Give it straight to that lodge and NOT to the national call center.

Little bit of bitter experience here.

Thanks for the quick replies. This was a letter in the mail so I'm sure it's legit (I even got the cool sticker). Sounds like they're OK.

Thanks DarkSoldier - things will be OK unless Obama decides to cut defense spending. Definately less "fun money" though.

Thanks also to current and former LEOs for the job that you do. I'm ex-military and we could always just blow up the a-holes we encountered.

Unless the FOP has changed I wouldn't give them a cent .

Had a buddy who was a cop few years back and use to go with him to the FOP lodge to play pool and have a few Beers once in awhile place was full of Strong Antigun garbage .

Had the huge poster of a gun colored in like an American Flag with stats on crimes committed with guns among other things most of it straight from the old Handgun Control INC .

They also took the official position against CCW in Missouri when it was put up for a public vote a few years back .

I wouldn't give FOP a dime, legit or not.

Back in '96 they went on National Public Radio and argued that ONLY cops should be exempt from laws which disarm those convicted of domestic violence. They said:

1. A gun is the "tool of the trade" for the cop, and you couldn't take it away because he beat his wife.

2. Taking the gun from an angry, violent cop wouldn't only make him more angry and violent.

3. Cops convicted of beating their wives would be "closely supervised" and didn't need their guns to be taken away.

It was despicable and cowardly.

Ohio's FOP wasn't at all happy with our CHL efforts....

I'm sure the field troops are fine guys, but the leadership ain't getting a penny from me.

Regards,

I would get those same ?s when i was an LEO. I suggested that people donate locally, were it matters. I am not sure but back in the 90's I heard they were anti gun, maybe some but not all.

Don't give the FOP a dime.

Their track record on RKBA is sketchy at best--often down right anti-citzen rights in the not-distant past.

Unions that ask for money from non-members--offering stickers and a warm-fuzzy--leave a nasty taste in my mouth.

+1. If you or your organization want to do something nice for the local PD, get with the city/township, etc. and offer to donate toward the purchase of equipment they need. I do not advocate sending money. A check made out to the manufacturer/supplier insures that it is being spent according to your wishes.

Our local Sheriffs dept said they NEVER solicite by phone or mail & to not give them 1c

I've returned to the issue after researching and the FOP has changed their positions regarding RKBA that were sometimes anti in the 90's.

In terms of full disclosure, I am also now sending in a membership application.

I still would avoid and be cautious of orgs asking for money.

The last time anyone from the FOP called me and asked for a donation, I asked them if they, "...would like to sign-up under me as an AMWAY distributor". Mind you, I'm not in ScamWay, but they didn't know that.

I know...that was shameless.

What's their current position on ONLY police being exempt from the Lautenberg Amendment and other legislation which disarms those convicted of domestic violence? Until they PUBLICLY repudiate their former position, I will not only never give them money, I will badmouth them as long as I live.

Hmm my brother is a LASD Los Angeles Sherifs Department. He belongs to the PPOA Professional Peace Officers Association. I would have to ask him about the others

The local FOP doesn't solicit, but I agree that you should probably just give the money directly to the FOP rather than to some marketing company who may or may not be legit.

Even better, just give directly to a specific program if you want. About the only thing we raise money for is our underprivileged children's Christmas party and the shop-with-a-cop that proceeds it.

Some lodges may be OK, but the national organization seems to be strongly anti-gun and totally against the Second Amendment. They have even opposed hunting, saying that it is only an excuse for people to own "cop killer" guns.

The NACP (National Association of Chiefs of Police) is worse. They are part of the International Association of Chiefs of Police which was founded by an "officer friendly" named Heinrich Himmler.

Never donate on the national level. If you want your donation to make a difference, donate to the local chapter.

We fought FOP tooth and nail during the "It's a Crime, Bill" struggle. They were publicly in favor of it and expressed dismay that it wasn't stronger in actually taking guns away from "civilians."

That said, many of the locals did not follow that line and just quietly ignored the National.
