Free people own guns. Slaves don't.

Good poster.

As a sidenote, I had exchanged emails w/Clayton Cramer on the subject of Afro-Americans and firearms possession in the ante-bellum South. What drew my attention to it was the vast number of stories that involved Afro-Confederate sharpshooters.

As it was against official Confederate policy to permit Afro-Confederates to fight, this created a paradox. Notwithstanding the policy, many still fought and hence the numerous incidents which may be found. However, as marksmanship rarely happens overnight, thus Clayton Cramer was consulted. He pointed out that while "free" people of African descent could not possess firearms, slaves could. Presumably the owners knew who they could trust with a gun and who else was going to help hunt for dinner or rid the farm of vermin? When the war came along, it was a matter of the manservant being told to bag a "Yankee" instead of a crow, wolf or what not. Pick up a copy of Charles Stevens "Berdan's Sharpshooters in the Army of the Potomac" if you would like to read a couple of incidents involving Afro-Confederate sharpshooters. There's a contemporary historian by the name of Jordan who wrote a very good book, the title of which escapes me now, of Afro-Americans fighting on both sides in Virginia.

and to keep and carry arms wherever they went

:scrutiny: Hmmm. That almost sounds like the SCOTUS of that day had the weird idea that carrying arms "wherever they went" was as normal for free citizens as free speech.

Nah. Couldn't be.

Great poster, Oleg.

Ex-cellent!!

Great poster! (I take it that it's OK to print out and post anonymously at my PC workplace).

Next you'll be saying that cowboys carried guns.

it's great!

I posted it on craigslist world political forum.
they kicked me off the last time I posted your stuff!

Oleg:
Great poster (hopefully the liberals around my dorm can get through the whole thing before their brains go into meltdown), but why isnt there a leading quotation mark at the beginning of the quote?

Lack of " is a typo. Need to use real quotation marks instead of " anyway. Will fix tonight.

Speaking strictly as a typographer: I'd leave out quotes fore and aft. The quotation is clearly attributed at the bottom.

Out of pure and simple curiosity: do you use a formula to achieve your sepia tones?

Will fix the quotes shortly.

I use quad-tones in Photoshop and I am still playing with the curves to fine-tune the effect.

Updated the image with recommended fixes. Also uploaded a PDF version. I tis set up to print at 11"x14" and, thanks to vector text, can be printed even bigger without loss of clarity. Need to find out if folks can use actually PDF.

The file is 1.2MB, same size as the large JPEG but it should be more useful for printing.

I'd suggest putting the text in quotation marks so that the reader knows right away that the words are not those of the presenter. Despite the end attribution, because of the length of the quote the reader may get the impression that these are the views of the presenter.

I know that this is directly contrary to other advice offered above. Both are worth what you paid for them.

Either way, go Oleg!

Great picture/poster.

Since you have not copyrighted this material, are we to assume that you are placing it into the public domain?

Can I assume the picture of the model is either an original work by you, you have permission from the originator or it is also in the public domain?

In either case I would like your permission to forward a copy on to Kenneth Blanchard. He is the author of "Black Man with a Gun".

You should at least consider giving yourself credit by adding some sort of byline tag at the bottom.

Welcome to THR wamii! Ken is a actually a member here and has posed for more than one of Oleg's posters himself. :)

Here's another vote for including quotation marks around the text. When I first started reading the paragraph, I was expecting the view to be that of the activist holding the poster, because of the headline.

Oleg

Very nice. One possible flaw:

I can't get the link of the updated version to work, so don't know if you changed this part yet or not, but if you didn't:

Take the quote from the larger quote of:

"[....], who were recognized as citizens in any one State of the Union..."

This quote does not make sense. It was either miscopied from the decision, or it was copied correctly but never made sense to begin with.

If it was copied incorrectly from the opinion, then perhaps it should have said "..., who were *NOT* recognized as citizens...", or "..., who were recognized as citizens in *NO* one State of the Union", or something altogether different - I just don't know. I do know it's nonsensical as written (unless I'm missing something).

Now, if that's what the opinion read exactly, then I'd say leave it as is, because a "[sic]" would lead to more confusion to the average reader than it's worth.

KUTGW.

You are entirely correct; the notice is no longer required for a work to be copyrighted! Well I guess that just shows my age as I come from a time long ago when the copyright notice was required.

But then I did ask for permission first.
