From sea to shining sea...

I'd much rather kill a 16" pronghorn than a 400 lb. bear. Last time I looked, bears didn't have horns.

I really have no desire to do either...again, and it has nuttin' to do with horn or antler. My pronghorn hunts consisted of driving around looking for a group we could get close enough for a 200 yard shot. My bear hunts consisted of hunting over bait or using dogs. The dogs were fun, shooting a bear outta a tree.....not so much. I have ten preference points right now for a bear kill permit.......gonna give 'em to one of the boys when they want 'em. The bait thing has lost it's thrill for me, bear or deer.

That doesn't say I don't support the right of others to do it, nor do I not understand their enthusiasm to do so. I loved watching the dogs work, same with hunting coon/bobcats/coyote with them. Just don't like the shooting of the animal at the end of the chase, because it was the dogs that gave chase....not me. But, put a grouse, or a pheasant or a woodcock in front of a pointer's nose and I'll pull back the hammers on my old SxS everytime. Put me in a place where the dog will put up birds all day and there's a liberal bag limit and I could easily give up hunting any species again with a rifle. Nuttin' like a cackle, a flurry of wings and a explosion of fresh snow coming up in front of a staunch point. That's my idea of a trophy....and I need no mount to keep it a memory. Same with watching a big ol boss Tom dance across a 80 acre field with it's head glowing like a lighbulb in the subtle early morning light. Whether or not he makes to within 35 yards or not, is not always important, as long as there are days left in the season and birds still responding.

There are lots of hunts out there, and not all cost an arm and a leg. Many do not take the fitness of a 20-35 yer old to tackle. Most will still make your heart race and the adrenaline flow to the point you cannot hold your weapon still. Take your pick, but hunt for you, and the memories, cause in the end, that's all that's really important.

There are only two kinds of people who get to hunt BH sheep. The rich and the lucky.;) And some Canadian residents.
And poachers. Not a BH-a Dall but this is a hysterical sheep poaching story. The road South from Anchorage is bordered on the left by a steep cliff for the first 30 miles or so. There is one spot in particular well known for it's sheep concentrations. So well know in fact DOT built a pull off there. Must be a salt lick.
Despite the heavy road traffic there was one certain sheep that proved to much for this poacher, and he shot it. World class horns, curl and a quarter, better then 45". And he got caught.
Well ADF&G was so impressed with this sheep they had it mounted for there Alaska wild life collection.

Fast forward a few years. ADF&G is displaying this sheep at a show in Idaho, and who walks in but the very poacher who shot it. He reconizes "his" sheep and tries to steal it. And gets caught. Again.
Arrested twice for the same sheep. When he shot it and then again when he tried to steal it from a show thousands of miles away.

Omg that's hilarious!! You gotta love his dedication to that sheep. Maybe they could put "Poached by ________" on a plate under the mount.

I think he should get a free photo of his sheep "trophy" to hang in his prison cell.

He deserves whatever he got, and then some. I have driven that section of highway many times, and shooting a sheep there is about as hard as shooting a cow in a farmers field.

What I meant was they are in plain view at the base of the cliff and easy to shoot. It has nothing to do with size.

I have also driven by that section of highway many times. I know exactly where you are talking about. I guess you missed the joke there about having to look at the sheep everyday while in prison.

I know a fellow who was on probation and couldn't have a firearm. He got a bow and hunted with it. He walked up on 2 bucks fighting and shot them both BUT HE ONLY HAD ONE TAG. One was a 150" 10 point and the other a 180" non-typical basic 8 point. He had his buddy claim the 10 point and he claimed the nontypical. He won the local big buck contest and won a gun that he couldn't claim plus a free mount of the deer.

The local game warden investigates and interviews the guy with the 10 point and the stories don't match so he arrests them both and confiscates the mounts of both. However, the probie gets wind of all this and has a replica made but the game warden also gets wind of the whole deal and the perp gets 60 days and his replica confiscated too.

CRIME DOESN'T PAY.

No I got it. Just afraid this nutcase may enjoy it.

H&H,
Still waiting on those Ibex and Oryx pictures you were going to dig up. Why they aren't in an easily accessible photo album is beyond me.

So does the hunt have to be physically or mentally challenging to make the list? Reason I ask is no one has mentioned waterfowl. One of my absolute passions.

Many of us "older" guys have the bulk of our hunting photos as prints from 35MM film and just aren't interested in putting them on a electronic format.

Exactly......

Besides the point that I work for a living and only have a certain amount of time to spend on THR!;)

Persian Ibex. Shot in the Floridas Mountains of South Western NM in about 1985.

I've read of hunts all over the world. I've done a lot of hunting in the central Texas hill country and in the desert area around Terlingua.

What have come to be my favorite memories don't really involve the "where" or "for what" nearly as much as the close fellowship around the fire at hunt camp. I guess that it's the sharing of experiences over the years that pulls at my heart the most.

Here is one of several Oryx that I've killed in Africa. This one was shot in the Kalahari in 2008.

ohhhh you musta had money back then. All mine are still on 110. :neener:

oddly enough I dont take pictures now a days and Ive never been keen on mounts. Even though, my brother is an artist when it comes to Taxidermy...

Dream hunt would be Moose in Russia. As for the USA? a field, birds and dogs are what I am leaning more and more towards.

Floridas in 85, I was in that area at that time. Working under those 2 big stacks to the north. Loved that country down there.

Speaking of sheep and old photos I know this one will be grainy and bad. But, it used to be a common sighting on the North Fork of the Sun River just above Gibson Reservoir. Disease ravaged them sometime in the 80's. Shame.

Yes sir! That is some of my favorite desert country to hunt. I've killed a couple of mule deer and a pile of blue quail in and around the Floridas. I know the stacks you are talking about. They make a great landmark.

Famous old stage line ran North of Deming with dam good quail hunting North of I 10 all the way to the AZ line. Place out there in the desert called soldiers last farewell and you could almost imagine what that meant.
I guess the old stacks have been taken to the ground and there's nothing left there. Some big old mulies out there for sure.
