I have a few rifles that I use for target shooting. Some are equipped with a Lyman globe-style Front Sight that affords a few insert options. These options are various front sight post or circle inserts. With my aging eyes, I struggle with my focus on the post, and the circle just doesn't provide adequate accuracy.

I have seen some front sights with an aperture and cross hair for AR's, M1A, & Garand.

An example:

Has anyone here ever modified a Lyman type insert with cross hair wires ?

You can try it, but the fine cross hairs probably won't show up very well.

The aperture front and rear is usually the best for actual target shooting.

What you may need is a pair of prescription shooting glasses with the focus set for how far away the front sight is.
This will give a very clear front sight, which is what you want.

Another option is a Merit type adjustable aperture device that attaches to your glasses and is adjusted until the front is cleat and sharp.

If you want to try a cross hair front, just take an insert and carefully remove the post or aperture part leaving the outer ring.
Use Super glue to glue wire or even actual hair on the ring, then paint it black with flat black model paint.
