I was thinking of speaking with a local gunsmith about a similar set up for my Cobra. The front sight on the ejector shroud D frames leave a lot to be desired IMO.
Colt actually offered some DS pistols with a tritium insert in the front sight. I owned one about ten years or so ago and made the mistake of selling it. I wonder if Colt will install the tritium lamps in the Custom Shop.
A colored insert. (Has to be a LONG one or it just doesn't show up, due to the long sloped sight ramp).
A luminous insert. (Has to be drilled in-line with the barrel or done as a block set in the ramp. The block type work, but are vulnerable to getting battered or broken off)
Alteration of the sight to give a steeper slope in conjunction with one of the above options.
As noted above a patridge with gold bead can be fitted. I had Jim Stroh of Alpha Precision do this on a Mag Carry. He even offers different diameter gold beads. It was dovetailed in after milling off the old sight. I believe Grant Cunningham in Oregon offers to modify the existing sight ramp to make it steeper. a colored sight insert could also probably be fitted by a gunsmith.
Mas Ayoob has written of cutting away and flattening out the rearward portion of the front sight ramp. I never had any problem with my Agent's sight picture unaltered, though.
"Front Sight Modification (post-1972 Detective Special, Cobra, Agent, Police Positive Special): One of the few complaints about the post-’72 “D” frames concerns the ramp front sight. The long ramp, no matter how painted, tends to “gray out” in bright lighting conditions. By recutting the ramp to a steeper angle and serrating it, you get a sharp clear sight picture in all conditions. (Pictures of the reshaped sight available on request.) The job includes recutting, serrating, and finishing the sight in red or black."
Unfortunately, he's closed his waiting list, which means he won't be able to get to your handgun until...2011 or so.
I wonder if you could get a night sight dot installed?
There's a lot of cool things we miss out on as Colt revolver owners (clipdraws that screw into the frame, Crimson Trace lasers, a full selection of grips), but considering the alternative -- I think it's worth it.
