What would be involved to purchase a handgun from a private party in New York state (I'm near Rochester)? Once I get my pistol permit (in the process now), I'd like to get a handgun as inexpensively as possible, and one option will be to "put the word out" that I'll buy one (to folks at church, in the community, local online groups, etc.) If I do locate someone who will sell to me at a good price, what are the laws and procedures for such a transfer?

Thanks for the help!

Scott in Penfield NY

You get a receipt from your friend and his pistol permit Info.. Go to the Permit bureau and Get a slip that you give to the owner of the gun -The pistol permit office will Put the gun On your permit- the Slip you give your friend shows you have transfered the gun -Your friend must now go to the Bureau and remove said gun from his permit. At a cost of $3bucks for each of you.
Our Judge in Genesee county limits you to 10 guns Yours -monroe - Might be different -Every county in NY is different The County Judge is the Lord god and ruler of the pistol permits.
At the Rochester Gun show at the Dome arena They have the pistol permit clerk there in an office so you can transfer gun On the spot-I think the last lady passed on ?? She was nice and helpful I Hope Im wrong as I think she was not forced to be there
Feel free to PM me -Randy

I agree with HK. It may be more convenient (with a little coordination w/ your friend) to attend a gun show where the PP clerk is available. Otherwise, the process HK describes is pretty much the hoop jumping.

I'm not sure if your first gun added to the PP costs anything, though, after that it may. I believe it more true every time I here how each county in NY has its own flavor of doing things. I could be wrong on the transfer cost and it is likely a moot point considering your original question. Carry on, nothing to see here...
