Full Auto Winchester 74

I've heard about this happening to others, just this is the first time for me...

Pulled the trigger and three 22 cals jumped out.
Pulled the trigger again and three 22 cals jumped out.

Opened the hatch, pulled the ammo out, reloaded.

Pulled the trigger and one 22 cal jumped out...every time, the rest of the day.

Took the barrel off the stock and found lots of crud: I'm planning to take it all the way apart (this will be a first for me...so please pray for me...) clean it and check the sear.

Any other thoughts???

It may be a bit over cautious of me, but personally I'd take it to a gunsmith as soon as you can. The ATF doesn't distinguish between purposeful full auto firing and accidental full auto firing, and they have prosecuted people even when the FA was a well known defect with that rifle.

But for what you can do at home, the sear is the first place I'd look.

Clean it thoroughly. If it quits, it was just filthy dirty. Clean it sooner next time.

If it does it again, do not stop at go, do not collect 200 dollars, go straight to the gunsmith.

I had an AR7 that used to do the same thing when it had been shot a lot and the insides were not cleaned regularly. Pull of the side plate, and a quick blast of Gun Scrubber and things went back to normal.

Clean it, had a marlin 60 do that when it got real cruddy with cheap thunderbolt ammo.

And my Mossberg 702 will do sixers if you let it go a looooong time without cleaning.The rate it dumps the rounds out is amazing. It just feels like you fired a .308 out of a 3 pound rifle, and you notice you only have half a magazine left!
