Hit 60+ outside today so had to hit the range. I have been reloading a bunch in the past few months, so wanted to chrono some of those loads. Also bought a new toy (SRH 44 + Leupold 2x) that I had to try out.

Im kind of a geek, I love the info from the chrono. Figuring Im not the only gun / data geek on the site, I thought I'd share. All velocities are in fps.

First up, Ruger Single Six, 6.5", CCI Minimags (advertised mv is 1260, expect that is out of a rifle). 6 shot sample size.
1. 1152
2. 1170
3. 1123
4. 1087
5. 1124
6. 1149
AVG: 1134 (103 ftlbs)

Next, some 9mm handloads. Walther PPQ M2 4". Rainier plated hollow point 115gr bullets loaded over 6.6gr HS6 at 1.10" OAL.
1. 1169
2. 1126
3. 1165
4. 1120
5. 1157
AVG: 1147 (336 ftlbs)

Moving up to the .357, S&W 686+ 6".
First on the .357 was a load Im working on as a plinker - a step up from .38+p, but not a full house .357 magnum. Using a 158gr Hunter LRN over 8.4gr HS6. Im pretty happy with this load.
1. 1144
2. 1135
3. 1182
4. 1167
5. 1173
AVG: 1160 (472 ftlbs)

Then tried out some 140gr XTPs over 18.9gr of H110. Note that Hornady lists 18.4gr as a max load. Hogdon & Lee, on the other hand, list 19.0 as max load. Though not listed, I worked up to this load in past trips to the range. Interestingly, even at 18.9, my measured velocity was short of what Hornady & Lee listed as max. A bit curious as to why. Anyhow...

2. 1326
3. 1328
4. 1371
5. 1340
6. 1312
AVG: 1343 (561 ftlbs)

Moving up to heavier projectiles in 357, mostly to satisfy my own curiosity, I loaded some 180 XTPs with 2400. I did a full range today, starting at 10.0gr all the way up to 12.3gr. In order to keep this post of tolerable length, I will list average only of the loads short of 12.3gr.
10.0: 975
10.6: 1023
11.4: 1089
12.3: The consistency of this load was impressive to me.
1. 1171
2. 1177
3. 1170
4. 1158
5. 1170
AVG: 1169 (546 ftlbs)

Last up in the 686 was some Buffalo Bore Heavy 357 I bought last year. 158gr hp. Listed at 1475fps. I was impressed to find that it actually exceeded this number. 3 shot sample due to $1/round+ cost.
1. 1506
2. 1493
3. 1496
AVG: 1498 (787 ftlbs)

Finally, after smashing some plates and water bottles, I decided to chrono a few rounds from the SRH, 7.5" barrel. Hornady custom ammo, 240gr XTP listed at 1350fps. I was quite surprised when I chronoed this ammo, to find it was running nearly 100fps faster than listed. Again, 3 shots due to price of factory 44 rounds (I'll be reloading for it soon).
1. 1446
2. 1432
3. 1465
AVG: 1448 (1118 ftlbs)

Overall, a great and overdue afternoon at the range.

PS: Mods, I couldnt decide where to throw this post. General Gun Discussions? Handguns (as all chronoed were out of handgun)? Reloading? Feel free to move if different venue is considered more appropriate.

Sounds like a good time. I also enjoy getting the chrono out.

I have found over the years that each firearm is different and velocity with the same load may be quite different between them. For example my 2-1/4" Ruger SP101 always has higher velocity than my 4" Dan Wesson with the same load.

Cool beans. Are those buffalo bore "heavy" ruger only loads? Or are they within spec for the 686? 158s at 1500 is pretty impressive.
