Hey folks, I have a Savage 110 in .270 Win that I am having some work done on(new barrel in 35 Whelen) and I was considering getting some additional work done to further increase its accuracy. It currently shoots about .75" groups at 100 yards, but I'm kinda a perfectionist, and I want something a little better. I am having the stock pillar-bedded. Some of the improvements I am considering are-
-Squaring the bolt face and receiver
-lapping the locking lugs
-lapping the barrel (It is not a match-grade barrel, tolerances are
- +/-.0002")
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=432109&t=11082005 -this is the barrel I am having installed

Any suggestions as to which of these are worth doing? Ideally, I am hoping for the 35 whelen version to group at or under .5"-is this a practical goal?

You can build a good .35 Whelen, but do not expect 0.5 minute groups from it. Many Whelens have really great barrels and all of the rest of the stuff needed to shoot well, but the bullets are not made to be target grade.

Most 35 caliber bullets are made to be minute-of-moose bullets and so, do not perform in the 0.5 minute category.

Nevertheless, a .35 Whelen is an excellent caliber and well worth the time and money.
