Future of the Steyr M9?

Well, much to my dismay, the Steyr M and S series are discontinued. :mad: On top of that, there's been talk that Steyr doesn't have a US importer... what's the story on that?

On the bright side, a "new and improved" version is coming out: the M-A1 (not to be confused with Springfield Armory's M-1A :p ). Light rail, improved grip, and lighter (766 grams, compared to the M's 780).

Anyone had the chance to try one out yet? Can we even get these in the U.S.? :(

P.S.Mentioned in the specs is a caliber I've not heard of... 9x21? Is it the metric version of .38 Super?
 
Keep in mind that I have never actually participated in any IPSC activities, but years ago I thought about it, and I read a lot about it. It seems I remember something about the 9x21mm as something that would let you shoot Major (?) but still with a Hi-Cap pistol instead of something like the 1911 7+1's at the time.

As I said, it's just somehting I seem to remember, but I'm not sure about.
 
Those look like sweet pistols.

I hope someone will do a collabrative production in the US, like S&W did with Walther. I'm hoping Colt would pick it up, they need a wonder 9. A .45 model wouldn't be bad at all either.

No, the 9 mm Largo (aka Bergman Bayard) is a former spanish military round.
The 9x21 is what you wrote, a bypass for idiotic laws:))

I handled the new M9A1 in Nurnberg IWA2004, the gun is much better looking piece than the old M9. There is no subcompact version yet.

They showed a version with camouflage pattern grip (broafff) and versions without the multiple-child-proof-very-useless safeties :)-)).

The price is some 570 euros, which is about 650 USD.

Yes the M series is being discontinued/updated with the M-A1 pistol. The only differences between the M series and the M-A1 is a different grip/frame that is supposed to improve point characteristics (which is already excellent in th M and S series), and to improve grip purchase. Also, the M-A1 has an improved accessory rail.

The M-A1 will be available in the following calibers: 9x19, 9x21, 40 S&W, and .357 SIG ("upon request") .


Steyr DOES have a US importer/distributor, though they are not yet listing the new M-A1 pistol on their website.

I receieved an email from a Steyr-Mannlicher exec. at the beginning of the year and he informed me that they were very excited about the usasteyr arrangement and that they were waiting for BATF approval on importing the new M-A1 pistol. He estimated that the new M-A1 would be available in the USA in late Feb. or early March, obviously he was a little too optimistic about the time frame.

Steyr-Mannlicher has been around a long time, I wouldn't write them off too easily. They have alot invested in the intial M/S series, and now the M-A1 pistol and they're going to work hard at grabbing a share of the US market.:D

Higher price, too, isn't it?
 
The New MA-1 Pistols are in Steyr's USA warehouse. There is a short delay in getting then to the dealers due to documentation that the BATF needed to clarify before distribution. Your dealers can pre-order one for you and will ship as soon the docmentation has been approved. It should not be long before they are in shops.

When the M9 was introduced it had a MRSP of around $600.:eek:
Now they can be had for around $350.


I don't think the actual retail price of the new M-A1 will be anywhere near $350.:( But they should be about the same price, or slightly lower than a Glock. Which ain't too bad considering many people feel the M/S series are the equal, or superior to the Glock line, and the M-A1 is supposed to be an improved M series.:D

I think that they are going to sell for around the $450 mark, don't ask me how I know, I think I read it somewhere. If they are going to replace the S series I would like to with what, that's what I'm really interested in right now.
 
If you want an MA1, id recommend you get a CDNN Steyr M as they are the same, except for the frame (grip texture and light rail). I have a feeling they will be around $450 as well to compete with the XDs and Glocks. Got my M9 with spare magazine and shipping for $310.
