NOT tooting my horn (OR THEIRS!!!)--spur of the moment choice made when they sent me the 'you'd better pay up' letter this week. Called the number (choice #7 from the number on the provided 800# from the form-- NRA VA by their menu)--asked about options. Was about to renew for 3 years and asked--any specials to get a life membership? Yes, if a relative was a lifer (the Mrs. and F-I-L are)---300 bucks straight up, one time lump.He gave me his promiss on the price--and his name and number.

NOT looking to inspire the 'NRA bad/good thing of recent vintage' and debate. I know they are 'making a buck'--but the world isn't perfect and they have the biggest pro-RKBA/civil rights tent around---and grade fairly on the support of RKBA alone regardless of other professed beliefs, politics, faiths, orientations, creeds, etc.

Just a heads up.

If your NRA Lifetime Membership is anything like my lifetime memberships in other organizations you won't get any less mail...just more mail requesting money for different reasons; i.e. memorials, cost of doing business, political contributions, etc, etc. But if you can withstand the barrage of mail, lifetime memberships are usually a good deal. Congratulations.

First, good job.

Second, if there were 30 million NRA members, there would be no discussions in Washington D.C. about "gun control" legislation.

Third, if you believe that it is some other gun owner's job to join the NRA, the "gun control" crowd loves you and says, "Thanks".

Fourth, if you don't like the mail from the NRA, call them and ask them to stop.

All very simple.

P.S. The number of members on the NRA's roster is what politicians look at when deciding whether they want to vote "with" the NRA or "against" the NRA. The pols don't care about the cost of membership; they care about your vote at election time.

I've always been curious about the point of the life membership, since the point of the NRA is to collect money for RKBA lobbying, right? Seems like they would often get less money long term out of a $300-700 "lifetime" commitment vs. a yearly fee of whatever it is; $30-40?

I must have been posting my edit when you were posting.

The membership cost is not what gives the NRA its political heft.

Here's what does: "Senator XXX, we have 30 million members who might not be happy with your vote on this issue..."

gd

P.S. "XXX" chosen for humour.

Long before the NRA WAS a 'lobby', they were (and indeed are, for standards of safety and rules of most competitions) the Lords and Masters of American Shooting Sports and offered their expert advice and training to the United States armed forces in times of crisis and have -Always- supported missions of training such groups as the BSA (and many others).

I long for day that, again, they will have no 'political' agenda to worry about---but can go about their more meaningful duty, to support the goals of American Marksmanship and gun safety training without any needless distraction.

Me too but, sad to say, that day is never going to come. I'm pushing seventy years old and I've come to understand that there will always be a sector of our populace who are (and always will be) hell-bent on robbing us of our God-given right to Keep and Bear Arms. I applaud you for your renewed commitment to the NRA and its over century's year old sovereign cause to protect our fundamental freedoms. Eternal vigilance and God bless America!

I was given my life membership by the NRA as a gift.

And other than hobknobbing with politicians to skirt things by thereby circumventing parts of the Constitution, they constantly harass me for donations.

It's honestly aggrevating.

Apparently, your benefactor thinks more highly of your gun rights than you do.

First off, to the OP, Thank You! As has already been said in this thread, if we had about 30 million more people just like you, the battle to preserve our 2nd amendment rights would be less of a constant fight for all.

I was a life member, recently upgraded to Endowment. I also cover the cost of my children, and grandchildren's yearly membership each year. I got an offer this year that IF I could have swung it, I would have been able to upgrade all of them to life members. There just ain't enough in the budget this year for that, hopefully in the future.

What saddens me the most is the statistic they tout that better than 100 million Americans are gun owners, yet the NRA's membership is around 4 million. It's tough to carry 96 million freeloaders. But I thank each and every one of my fellow members for helping to carry the load, and fighting the fight to preserve our rights with their treasure and talent.

Wanna know something funny?

He complains about it too.

Imagine that.

It sounds as though defending your rights is a bit too much work for you.

I wonder if you would complain or would find it "aggrevating" if you somehow found your gun rights restricted.

My thanks to all the NRA members who are willing to pull the weight of those for whom it's just too much trouble.

Really????
I have been a member for six/seven years and a Life Member for about five years; my wife has been a Life Member for about a year and a half.

I get zero mail or email.
She gets the occasional mail, and I mean one or two per year. She gets zero email.

To those that don't take the time to read the whole post of some of those above.:banghead:

YOU CAN OPT OUT OF THE MAIL AND ADVERTISING WITH A SIMPLE EMAIL OR PHONE CALL.

I went with Life Membership last year. I get e-mails from NRA-ILA. I don't always read them, but it's simple enough to stop unwanted e-mails. I have yet to get anything in the mail asking me for money, contributions, what-have-you's. I get the occasional catalogs from NRA Store, but I'm very happy with my membership. When my son is born I'm gonna start watching for the $300 life deal, and snag it up.

Like was said above, politicians look at numbers.

If you really believe this why are you even on this forum? If you cherish your rights, especially those regarding gun ownership and use, then please consider getting on the right side of the issue and help do things the "right" way. I don't consider encouraging politicians to read, understand and enforce Constitutional rights to be "circumventing" the Constitution.

He may indeed be a troll, but the topic is important and others "on the fence" about the issue might just realize that their participation is necessary.

He might have just done all of us a favour, albeit unintentionally.

Best -
