so im watching a show on Court TV, one of those "Worlds ____ist ____" (Deadliest/chases, dangers/police videos etc)

and its a story of an officer responding to a silent alaram. aside from

Entering the building expecting it to be a false alarm
shooting one handed (assumedly talking on the radio with the other hand)

after a brief shootout the suspect takes a round in the butt, and goes down. at this time the officer goes to the trunk for his rifle. and as we see from the survalience tapes, produces the distinctive G36 outline.

anyone know of any dept that issue g36 as trunk guns>

(show was World's Wildest Police Videos on Court TV)

At least one Georgia PD issues G36s for SWAT guys who, I think, also carried them when doing their primary patrol job as well as SWAT stuff.

If memory serves Gecko45 carried one under the seat of his golf cart. But then he was/is mall security not law enforcement.

G36 is a Heckler and Koch designation for their version of the caliber 5.56 Nato battle carbine.

I thought the U.S. Capitol Police was issued H&K USC .40 S&W sub caliber carbines and not the G-36.

Oh, okay yes every patrol car in America needs one, to counteract all the .50 BMG rifles.
Newsflash: school shootings and mall shootings happen. When the BG has a rifle, the police need rifles, too. Columbine was what happened when you waited for a specialized unit to come and address the threat.

Also, most patrol rifles are not select fire. For instance, we have M16A1s, but the fun switch has been removed.

Baltimore city MD police swat-type teams use them, at least there was a photo in the local paper a year or two ago of a city policeman in with one (responding to a false alarm.)

Well, that is not really news. Most shooters, at least the Utah Mall shooting and the last couple of school shootings I can think of the whackos were armed with shotguns and pistols, not rifles.

Not saying a a rifle would not have been handy, but most cars already carry shotguns. And still the police did nothing by and large.

Come to think of it given the threat it does seem a huge waste of tax payer money when there are so many other cheaper options out there as well.

I think the G36 is a waste of money, especially when DHS will essentially give away M16A1s to state and local PDs. You can argue all day long about whether a G36 is better than an M16, but it's almost inarguable that a free (well, pre-paid, back in the 70s) M16 is more cost effective than a $1,000 G36.

As to the whole shotgun/pistol/rifle debate, the saying is that the pistol is a weapon you carry to a gunfight you were not expecting. Shotguns, obviously, are more effective than a handgun, but in a school or shopping mall have some serious concerns (scattered buckshot or overpenetrating slugs and lowered accuracy and practical range compared to a rifle). Rifles are a far better answer even to non-rifle threats, and pretty much the only practical answer to a rifle-armed nutjob (who have engaged in mass shootings in the past and will continue to do so in the future).

The point of my columbine comment is that if you dont have the rifles in the cars, it means you're waiting for a rifleman to show up. That can be a long wait. The only other option is to go in with a weapon that is less effective than the weapon being used against you, which rarely goes well for you or, by extension, the people you're trying to protect.

im talking about the rifle. not the combat tupperware.

i know most place will issue M4/M4gery carbines and orther M16 contracts and handme downs. but thats what made me ever pay attention to this. i didnt even think about the show until the G36 came out. had i known i woulda paid attention to when they say what dept he was.
