Galyan's Discountinuing handguns

I buy all my guns from my trusted local small business dealer.

Although our Galyans in Peoria, Illinois had one heck of a handgun selection, and it was fun to sample their stock, I would not buy from them because their sales people were not knowledgable, and well, I would rather support my local economy.

Why is anybody buying at these massive chain stores? Support your local gun shops, people. I'm no economist - maybe I'm wrong - but it seems to me if we'd go to the gun shops for our guns and gear, higher volume sales would help their prices would come down some. In any case, don't those guns stores donate a lot of the money we spend there to RKBA groups?

Like I said, I could be wrong on the economics, but I watched two guns shops close in my hometown. :(

No offense to Bass Pro, Cabela's, etc., as hunters are a big chunk of their business.

The sale is a done deal. It's a fact. Dick's will be converting all the Galyon's to Dick's. The merchandise mix will be the same as Dick's current mix. This is where Dick's positioning has found the money to be. The largest sales and profit store in the Dick's listing is in Columbia,MD where they sell TONS of athletic program team equipment to all the junior sports teams in Howard County. It is also one of the most dilapidated stores in the chain and due to be renovated. If you were Dick's what would you do?

They were finally building a Galyan's near where I live. Galyan's carried a lot of things Dick's doesn't carry, and definately a lot better selection of outdoors clothing.

Hopefully they'll finsih the building and some other outdoor store will move in. I doubt it will become a Dicks considering you can see the current Dick's store from where the Galyan's was being built.

Pardon my language, but Dick's sucks. At least the one in Lansing, MI does. Don't get me wrong. If I were in the market for golf clubs or running shoes, I would be there. The local Galyans had a lot of clothes, but they also had a decent gun selection, decent prices, an plenty of hunting and camping gear. They certainly had more than Dicks.

As for my local gun shops. There have been several comments about supporting the local economy and their support of gun rights. The big chain stores hire local people, pay them a wage, and pay taxes which go to support the local economy. As for support of gun rights, I don't know if the local shops do anything beyond putting out NRA flyers and ads for CCW classes (which Galyans also does). Don't get me wrong, I do shop at local gun shop, but it is 90 miles from where I live. The ones that are closer fall into two categories:
1. High prices and bad service.
2. High prices and mediocre service.
Sorry, I am not going to keep them in business just because it is the "right" thing to do.

We have a "trendy, two level" Galyans in Henderson in the "trendy, two level" Galleria Mall. In other words I don't go there unless I have to. The few times I have been in there the gun salespeople were jerks and never offered to help me - just ignored me. That was all I needed to stay well clear of that place. Then they send me coupons and the list of things excluded from the discount takes 10 minutes to read! No thanks!

I won't lose any sleep when Galyan's goes bye-bye. Here in the Twin Cities, Gander Mountain has much better sales staff, better stock, good prices and great service. The guys behind the gun counter at my local Gander are retired LEO, firearms instructors and/or hunters who know their stuff.

And, when Rosie O'Donnel or others of her ilk are able to bully Gander Mountain into not selling handguns, or EBR's, then where are you going to go?

These are big corporations, and they bend and twist to political/social pressures.

The guy down the block who owns a shop that charges $10 more for a Remington 870 Express is far more likely to stand up for your Second Amendment rights than some beancounter at Gander Mountain's corporate office. (Or Galyan's, or Sportsmen's Warehouse, or any of the other discount/chain stores).

My roommate and I went to Galyan's last night to check out the handgun selection and see if there were any deals. The handgun selection was down to maybe 25% what it was when they first opened (about 6 months ago), and everything was on sale. Nothing particularly compelling. Our Dick's has a much better ammunition selection than Galyan's. Galyan's has a better accessory selection-- holsters, a lot of scopes and rings, and good selection of cleaning supplies. Dick's has a few scopes and rings, and a decent cleaning section. I'm disappointed in the decision to drop handgun sales, because they were really the only thing that would get me into the store.

Indy

Dick's stores where built brand new over the last 18 months to compete with Galyans stores across the street. Including the new location replacing a the a tornado closed. Size content and layout allmost the same. No handguns in Dick's store.

Just got back from the Galyan's in Fairfax, Va

Counter-dude stated that the handguns in the counter were at the 'sale' price and that some handguns from other stores would be shipped to them to sell.
Once they're gone, they're gone.

Still to pricey for me.
