Game harvested with S&W M10 ?

Most Sunday mornings, I leave the house to walk about the back 40; which is an oval shaped block of land and swamp about 2 miles wide and a little over 4 long. This past Sunday morning, no different. It was very frosty with a touch of wet snow on the ground. Sat in my deer chair with sun rising over my right shoulder, very slight breeze on my face. Out of the hedge comes a small deer, galloping across haylot in front of me. Deer runs in front of me back into corner of woods. 150 yds behind deer, out of woods is a trotting feral dog. A about 25 yds out the M10 speaks, feral beast rolls over.
Saturday morning after July 4, my son and his fiancée were planning to visit for dinner. Raspberry chicken on the grill salad and strawberry shortcake for dinner. just after daylight mr big turkey and a gathering of nuggets were at edge of strawberry patch. M10 Expresses concern about that, nuggets are off in a flurry, raspberry turkey and strawberry shortcake for dinner.
A few years ago, helping a neighbor with a fence, it was deer season. Nice little Buck strolls out from some scrub apples and stands broadside at about 20 yds. Deer just stood there. Very careful aim at side of head M-10 filled Buck tag for the season.

I know some of my experiences may have stretched the game rules.

What game has your M-10 harvested ?

 

I remember one article where the old handgun hunter Bob Milek said a group hunted black bear with 38 specials. Put the shot in the right place with a proper bullet and it will kill.

I would like to hear more about the raspberry chicken. Sounds good.

Raspberry chicken is one our favorites, works well with game birds also.
Take a cup or so of frozen/thawed raspberries, mushed.
Add some hosin sauce, orange peel, crushed garlic and a small amount of rice wine vinegar.
The resulting marinade is a disgusting brown red color, place in a plastic bag add chicken pieces.
Like boneless thighs for this, any part will do. Marinate 4 hrs or more, overnight is fine.
Or place the whole mess in freezer- thaw out when ready to grill.
Spark a wood/charcoal fire, once fire is settled down slowly grill the chicken laid on foil.
Keep bathing chicken in marinade until chicken is done and marinade evaporated.
I know bathing grilling stuff in the marinade is considered not good practice - I don't care.
Sometimes a little light beer on the chicken and in the griller helps.
We usually serve with croni salad or Cole slaw.

 

Nothing so noble as your game OP. I did take seven rattle snakes out of the hunting cabin wood pile a few weeks ago getting ready for deer season with the old Mode 10. That got exciting. I have also killed a fair number of up-armored opossums (armadillos) with my old Model 10 too.

 

I've harvested many 9 and 10-rings... and even a few X-ers' with my Model 64, that's about all the hunting that my fixed-sight .38 Spl's can claim to this point.

Cool stories, I'd love to have been there when the deer tag was filled .

Thanks for the recipe Nero. Sounds easy and good. We make Teriyaki and Honey chicken almost the same way. Mix honey and teriyaki and marinate for a while then grill and brush with the marinade thats left over.

My favorite gunwriter Terry Murback told a story about a fellow that killed his deer with a 38 wadcutter. Just goes to show that power will never make up for shot placement.

 

Hahahaha! Up-armored opossums! Thats too funny. I have yet to see one north of the Kaw river, but they are increasing in populace south just a ways. Had one sneak up on me at night while "poppin a squat" about an hour south in Toronto (Kansas)

Paper trembles at the sight of my Smith & Wesson model 10!

 

Its almost un-American to not own a Smith & Wesson model 10. I have two right now. A 6" barreled gun and my mothers heavy barrel nickle plated model 10 she wore while working at the Sheriffs Office. I need a skinny 4" barreled gun. I had a RHKP I stupidly sold back when another model 10 was just $150 bucks away.

But any fixed sight 38 Special is a gun everyone should own. A Colt Officers model, A Ruger Service Six or the often forgotten Taurus model 82. I have owned 3 of those and they were some of the best service type guns I have ever owned. And they are a little heavier built than the model 10.

Owning a model 10 is a rite of passage. Its sort of like needing to own at least one lever action 30-30 and a bolt action 30-06, a pump 12 gauge and a 22 rifle of some sort. Throw in a 22 caliber handgun and you have a well rounded gun collection. At least the beginning of one.

 

I agree with your sentiments, the only one of those I don’t currently have is the .30-06... I sold my sporterized Winchester made 1917 years ago. I have so much caliber-overlap in bolt rifles that I’ve never replaced it.

My fixed fight .38’s consist of four snub revolvers, a pre-M10 M&P 4” and the 4” stainless Model 64... the rest of my .38’s are all adjustable sight models (or .357’s). A 4” fixed sight .38 revolver is truly versatile firearm indeed .

I only hunt the X rings anymore. Funny story, not trying to derail the thread. It's specific to an old, well loved M10 with a lot of memories of my little girl from age 4 until a few months ago.

When my daughter was little she always wanted to go Tar-Got shooting with Daddy. She even made up a whole story about how the evil Tar-Gots were aliens that invaded earth. They looked like paper and could only eat burned gunpowder. Ergo..... Tar-Got shooting.

Always talked about the complexities of the Tar-Gots everytime we were on the way. We got pretty imaginative about them. She was pretty good with my old 1911 and my M10. Took out squadrons of them over the years.

I sure miss those trips. She committed suicide early July 2020. (hanging) from the letters she left me, back in Dec, after Christmas a man couldn't take a clear "no" as an answer. Forced the issue. She fought the damage for 7 months. Just couldn't live with it anymore.

To keep this gun related, remembering that story helped me make a descision. When I can bear to let her go, I plan to scatter her ashes at our favorite place on Puget Sound. I'll slip that old M10 in the water with her. It was always hers anyway, has been since she was 4.

Keep it close Sweetling, don't let those Tar-Gots get you.

And yeah, I agree with your rite of passage sentiment. It was my first ever handgun. Wish I still had it.

Im not a Smith guy. I like my colts. Especially the M1917. But i do have a 38 spl S&W, a 14-4.

Plan on taking her M10 on my next bike ride over the Cascades. Might use it to put a rabbit in the camp pot if I get the chance

I hunted with it as a kid back in the mid 70's but never took anything bigger than an old carolina racoon. Mostly carried it for the feral dog packs that roamed around back then.

Fixed sight 38... that’s a category that has been on a population boom in my safe. Not just the 38spl though, my safe is growing in 38s&w too which is the old school equivalent of 38spl. It’s hard to say which one I like better. 38spl clearly has more power and potential but in smaller guns the 38sw is just a lot more pleasant. I really need to find a victory revolver in 38-200 so that I can bridge that gap and have the best of both worlds.
