I can't believe more people don't recommend the Sig 226, my favorite 9mm of all time. Affordable and incredibly reliable. Pick up an older West German made gun for around $450 and go shoot!

Concur on the P226. Accurate, ergonomic, great DA/SA trigger, and dependable. I have thousands of rounds through mine with only one failure due to a lousy mag.

Seriously guys? Hi-point? You guys are cruel... :neener:

I own the XDm 9mm, and love it. I've handled the Glocks, and they just don't feel quite right in my hand. It's easily taken down and assembled. Excellent quality. And how can you go wrong with 19+1?

Other than that, I'd go with a good quality, full-sized 1911. Maybe a Springfield Operator or Range Officer.

Dan Wesson makes some very nice ones, too. But at $1,590 for the Guardian, and even $1,275 for the Heritage, I have a tough time recommending them as a non-custom gun. That's a lot of cash. For $900+ I could still buy a H&K USP or a SIG P229 and still have lots of money left over for buying practice ammo, if that's your budget.

Current tally! (Man this is a lot of work)

So the Glock 19 is in the lead at 26 points? That's too bad.......

Because I just bought 10 Lorcins and love them! Super accurate, reliable, and economical.(That's thirty points!!!1!!)

LOLz. How deos a High Point get 16 points???

How deos a High Point get 16 points???

Probably %50 or so because they are reliable and they work. The other %50 may have voted just to be smarty pants. Man, they are ugly but I've seen them run trouble free more than once so you won't hear me knocking them. Beauty, value and ergonomics are in the eye (and hands) of the beholder.

If they're going to vote to be smart on a handgun...imagine what kind of a wife they'll vote for. A good %25 or more will be nominating their ex-wives just to get rid of alimony. :neener:

I would reccomend the Karh P9.
I have owned it since it came out.
It weights only 16 ounces unloaded.
Very reliable and accurate.
Comes with 2 magazines a 6 round and a 7 round with a finger extension.
Price is a little high but you pay for quality IMHO.
No safety , it is a DA only.
Stainless steel, no rust.

So if we can get enough people to vote on the high point you will actually buy one? I hate to see if enough people get together and start a campaign for the jennings or ravens...

"buy this (High point) and here's why (makes one wonder why you actually bought it in the first [place and people will giggle around you) and I own it (it is now a non-functional desk ornament that I gave to my father last year)" count as 3 points.

Seriously: I recommend both the Glock 19 and S&W 5904/5906. I owned them all and they have never failed to eat any rounds that I have given them. Magazines are plentiful and cheap. Both are reasonably priced and fun to shoot. Good luck

Glock 19. I own one and it is what I carry with or on me the vast majoity of the time. I do have a pocket .380, but that doesn't count. It is reliable, easy to shoot, not bullseye accurate, but more accurate than most of us and plenty for defense. Magazines are cheap, maintennace is nothing.

All that said probably the biggest endorsement I can give is I don't like it, but I still carry it. It is ugly, blocky. I much prefer my Beretta's and 1911's. But carry the Glock because it is so reliable and easy to shoot. and when it comes to carry I don't care much what happens to it, so less worry when I carry it. Its a Glock, I can buy 4 of them for the cost of one of my custom 1911's. My only honest conplaint about the 19 is the mags are thick for pocket carry.

Glock 17 OR 19. I own both guns; they ae easu and inexpensive to accessorize, spare mags are $17, the inside of the gun looks like an aircraft carrier flight deck (easy to clean) and the whole gun has 36 pats including the magazine. The are rugger, reliable, and accurate. Side bonus> They are soft recoiling and fast.

Second bet? HK USP. While more complex, the damend things are like tanks. Mine have gone forever without needing any attention other than cleaning. My USP 40 whicvh is one og the 1993 models, just had a hammer spring replaced. That's it. HKs are bullet proof.

Glock 17. I have one and I got my wife to carry it. Good reliable pistol with no fumble-safety. G19 would be interchangeable, so send 3 points to one or the other --this one is a wild card.

Just go with the Springfield XD9 Compact, 4" bbl. Nothing else can touch it for reliability hands down. 16 rd mags. Feels good in the hand, has a Holster, Mag holder and loader-assist(because the last 6 rounds are hard on the old thumb). Best buy for the money. Accuracy is great also. I would put my life on the line with it any day.

I have 6 - Colt 1911's in .45 and just got the Colt New Agent XS in 9mm. I collect Colts.

All are great guns but if I have to pick one gun from the safe to carry that is concealable, 100% reliable and idiot proof; that would be my only handgun other than a 1911 style... a Glock 19 gen 3. I have 5 -15 round mags for it and it feeds any ammo that I feed it.

+++ for the G19

So if we can get enough people to vote on the high point you will actually buy one?

If people were honest about their votes I'd try it. I never seriously considered the SKS, AK's or Nagants until I had a ton of people tell me I had to try it. Now I own them all.

Until this thread I never seriously considered Kahr or High Point pistols. So I've certainly learned a few things. If I don't like the gun that wins I'll buy it used and just sell it 6 months later after putting a few thousand rounds through it. It's really not that big of a deal.

S&W M&P9

Very reliable, accurate, easy to shoot. Ergos are fantastic, recoil very minimal even with hotter ammo. Great all around sized gun.

I do own one and use it for HD and CC.

By the way, let us only point you in the right direction. Make sure this choice is your choice. Get the gun that you can shoot the best/fits your need.

CZ75, I own it, and here's why: it feels, and points, like it was made from a mould of my hand. The factory trigger is very good, and is tunable to fantastic. It shoots where I look. It's reliable as anything I've ever seen. It's made of all steel, eats just about anything and asks for more, recoil feels barely more noticeable than a .22, and it's way more accurate than any GLOCK I've fired.

Beretta 92, I carried one overseas, and here's why: It's extremely comfortable to shoot (if your hands are big enough), it has a very short trigger reset, it's one of the most tested guns of all time, and they are quite accurate and reliable.

SIG P228 or P229, I carried one overseas, and here's why: It's easier to conceal than a Beretta, the design is much more elegant and simple than the Beretta, it's very, very accurate, the triggers are very, very good right out of the box, and they are very reliable.

S&W 3913, I wish could scrounge up the cash to buy one, and here's why: slender, good-feeling gun, beautiful, and one of the most concealable of the ones I'm mentioning.

HKP7, I wish I could scrounge up the cash to buy one, and here's why: everything I said about the S&W, and it's freaking cool, with an awesome trigger, low bore axis, and incredible accuracy reputation.

Just a vote AGAINST a Highpoint. I won't own one, (I have shot their 9mm), here's why, very ugly, very heavy, crappy trigger too. Negative 3 points! Glock, SIG, CZ are good brands to start a pistol collection. For little more than a Highpoint a Rock Island 1911 in 9mm would be a nice shooter.

S&W 6906:
Ultra reliable, good capacity(double stack), concealable and not a bad looker. To top it all off, the S&W 3rd gens are a relative bargain right now. Some smallish, ultra lightweight guns are a pleasure to carry but not so much a pleasure when putting several hundred rounds downrange. The 6906 strikes a nice balance between being a decent carry option as well as a real workhorse at the range.

A gen 3 Glock 19......Here's why, I own it and......It's big enough to be a range blaster & compact enough for concealed carry. It's as accurate as you are, spare parts are cheap and readily available, and take down is a breeze requiring only a small punch (no hammer required).
