Has anyone ever used one of the grenade launchers made for the M1 Garand? I found a couple different variations at Numrich's web site, and they're pretty cheap (under $50 for the launcher, sight5, and dummy projectile). Looks like something that would be really fun to play with - like model rockets, but cooler. :)

How well do they work? Also, my M1 is a tanker - would the launcher be a problem to use with its shortened gas system? Since the launcher bypasses the gas system, I don't think it would...

I've shot them in Advanced Infantry Training in 1962, and later used them once or twice on my first tour in Vietnam.

Basically, you have two types of grenades -- those that kick the heck out of you, and those that you dare not fire off the shoulder. We were taught to mark the sling, and rest the butt of the rifle on the ground, placing a foot on the sling at the mark, to get the right elevation when using rifle grenades.

Do NOT try to launch grenades from a Garand unless you know what you are doing. I would ESPECIALLY not use a tanker Garand to launch grenades.

The Garand had a problem with Op-Rods breaking from the stress of launching rifle grenades. That's why they added the op-rod relielf cut later. Having the op-rod break while firing is a danger to the shooter.

There are also upgrades to the gas system that were made to facilitate grenade launching.

If you are going to launch practice grenades, you need a Garand with the latest mods to the op-rod and the latest upgrades to the gas system. If you don't even know what those upgrades are, and how to recognize them, I wouldn't think of launching grenades. Btw, there were special grenade launching blanks used for launching grenades. Ordinary blanks are downright dangerous in this role.

The modified Op-Rod on your tanker Garand has been cut and rewelded. I would NOT attempt to launch grenades with that. I don't think it's safe.

Bottom line: Don't do it. Not with that rifle. Don't try it with another rifle without doing some research first.

To answer your original question. I have seen rifle grenades (practice) launched from the Garand. A buddy of mine has a rifle with all the latest upgrades and has a supply of practice grenades and launching blanks. He rechecks his rifle before and after each time. It is hard on the rifle.
