Garand Help

Last year I bought a M1 Garand from the CMP (my 2nd). I had it quite a while before I was able to take it out to the range, when I did, I found it to be shooting extremely low (10-12 inches @50yds). I took the rifle home and disassembled it again to make sure I had not made any type of mistake when I placed it back in the stock. It fits into the stock very, very tightly and I thought this could be the problem. So over the winter I have been slowly sanding away a minute bit at a time on the handguards and buttstock. I took to the range 2 more times and it was still shooting very low, with little or no change from before. So this morning I got up and exchanged the entire stock from my other Garand (great shooter) to my problem child and took it back to the range.
Well, STILL SHOOTING VERY LOW :banghead:. Now I'm almost scared of what the possible causes could be. The shots seem to group ok, just very low.
Do you think there would be any sense in contacting the CMP. The rifle has shot like this since I recieved it.
Anyone have any other suggestions I could try? Do they make lower front sight posts for the M1?
BTW-Ammo was greek HXP from the CMP.

So I'm wondering why you decided it was shooting low.

Maybe it's shooting just fine and the sights are the problem.

Have you made sure the sights are installed properly, zeroed correctly, with a proper height front sight?

Since the sights are mounted to the receiver and barrel it doesn't really matter whether it fits in the stock correctly. That has to do with grouping, not the actual sighting in.

Poor groups OK, maybe it's the bedding, but nowhere close to where the sights are aiming seems like a signt problem to me, or a defective barrel.

You can sand the stock til there is nothing left and nothing will change since the sights are integral to the receiver. Your problem, whatever it is, has nothing to do with the stock so put the sandpaper down

Your Garand has a elevation adjustment knob on the left side. The windage is on the right. Raise the rear sight using the knob and go back to the range. I still don't understand the sanding of the stock.

Just remember to crank the rear sight back down at the end of your range session. Leaving the sight up could cause damage to it during handling (bumped, dropped, etc.).

With a new-to-me M1, I start with the rear sight all the way down, then add 12 clicks of elevation to get on paper at 100 yds.
How many clicks are you using now?

I add a few clicks of up when my Garands are shooting low. On the other hand if they are shooting high I turn the sights down.

Hmm..I would sand my stock before adjusting my sights anyday

My M1 was shooting about 6"(with the rear sight bottomed out) high and 4" to the right at 100yds and it would string the shots vertically when the barrel would heat up as much as 7 inches. I sanded the spots on the stock where the barrel was rubbing and it fixed the windage problems. I loosened the gas cylinder lock one turn to see what would happen and it no longer shot high or strung the shots vertically. At 100yds its only shooting 1.5 high and all shots stay centered from the first to the last. You could also try loosening the gas cylinder lock one turn, it might be to tight and is putting undue pressure on the barrel causing it to shoot low(or high in my case).
