Looking at the rear leg of that tripod perched precariously on the wooden post behind him, I wonder if this guy's ever fired that .50 cal. :D

I doubt it, since the barrel seems to be plugged solid.

No. Look at the barrel again. The way the shadow bends when it enters the muzzle. If it was plugged it wouldn't bend that way.
 
The tripod is bolted to the wood. That's how I helped set up a nest once with the problem of nothing to brace the tripod to to get it high enough, drove posts into the ground and lagbolted the feet to the post.
