Gerber Sportsman steel

Back in 1972 I was given an 8" Gerber sharpening steel for graduation. The version that flips out of a leather scabbard that then can be used as a, sort of, handle.
I still have it and was just using it on some kitchen knives this morning. Anyone else use or remember these?

Gerber MK2 problems

I acquired a gerber MK2 survival knife from the mid-80's. Not being an expert on knives, I don't know Conan the barbarian's riddle of steel. No idea what the blade on this thing is made out of, and even if I did know, I wouldn't know what it meant. I just can't get this thing sharp. I don't know...

There was a time in days of yore (70's) that everyone I knew had one. It had a chisel point on it so you could use it to split the pelvis. I don't know whatever happened to mine. I have made some replacement sheaths and repaired some others for friends who still have and use them. I think the diamond sharpening sticks kinda replaced them, but that chisel point did work on our little Texas whitetails, never got to try it on elk.

I got the full size one. The sheath fell apart.
