...after this most recent shooting in Raleigh, NC:
https://apnews.com/article/shootings-arrests-north-carolina-raleigh-d470969568cfac88de520c6c7cc64741

Gist:
  • 15 year old boy seems to have decided to randomly shoot people. (killed 5, injured 2 more) There was no pattern.
  • He was apprehended after a manhunt and is now in critical condition. (police are not saying how he was injured)
  • They did not mention the shooter's name. (THANK YOU, even if it's just because he's a minor)
Some stats from near the end of the article are the ones that gun-grabbers are going to use:

APNews.com said:
The Raleigh shooting was the latest in a violent week nationwide. Five people were killed Sunday in a shooting at a home in Inman, South Carolina. On Wednesday, two police officers were fatally shot in Connecticut after apparently being drawn into an ambush by an emergency call about possible domestic violence. Police officers have been shot this week in Greenville, Mississippi; Decatur, Illinois; Philadelphia, Las Vegas and central Florida. Two of those officers, one in Greenville and one Las Vegas, were killed.

Thursday’s violence was the 25th mass killing in 2022 in which the victims were fatally shot, according to The Associated Press/USA TODAY/Northeastern University Mass Killings database. A mass killing is defined as when four or more people are killed excluding the perpetrator.

Of course this is horrible, but also of course we know that grabbing guns or limiting magazine capacity or other such measures aren't going to help. We should stand ready to discuss REAL commonsense solutions with gun-grabbers. The only ideas I have:
  • Hold the person responsible who let him have access to it, assuming it was reasonably locked up
  • Try the kid as an adult and have him executed, if possible
  • Try to learn what was going on that led to this and try learn from it
We'll see how it shakes out. Feel free to post updates here.

I'm hoping to see an update to the Greenwood, IN mall shooting; it's been a couple months now...

His photo and Identity leaked out Thursday. My wife showed it to me on her phone (I dont/wont own one). Pretty crazy stuff. Not sure what to make out of it other than my initial bias do to previous patterns on these types of incidents. Not the first time and wont be the last. It is what it is. Im sure there will be blame placed on lots of things/areas from all sides.

My take.... the only thing we can really do is concentrate on our own children and raise them right to respect life. Outside of that we really dont have much control. I could go on and rant about modern culture, drugs, self destructive behaivors etc. etc. and the impact it has on children (and adults BTW) mentally but whats the point.

Will it lead to major anti gun push in NC?...Hmmmm..I kinda doubt it. Probably some feel good nonsense but NC is extremely pro RKBA. Being so close to elections Im sure we will see some rallies and photo ops but thats not going to amount to much IMO.

Very sad though.

I dont know, I ran across this news article on a Raleigh news channel website...

https://www.wral.com/north-carolini...ooting-victims-wral-news-poll-shows/20512002/

In that article, they claim that a majority of NC residents support tighter gun laws such as raising the purchase age and banning "High Capacity" magazines. They point out that a majority of so called Republicans who were polled also support these kinds of laws. So there may be some kind of major anti gun push in my state.

The thing that gets me is that any republicans support tighter gun laws, must be fudd's.

Its a battleground state so there is a lot of BS that goes on with the newspapers and their Polls in NC. Antis are always trying different things but will be suprised if it goes anywhere. Kind of supprised riots have not broke out in NC yet.

Always good to stay aware though so its good that you and Smaug are bringing this stuff up. NC has practically been invaded by people migrating from blue states so. Shooting like this dont suprise me at all BTW. Kids today dont grow up in anything that come close to resembling my younger years. Then you throw drugs into the mix and all hell can break loose. When I was that age I was working and playing sports to much to get into trouble...didnt even have time for girls really. A lot of these kids literally have nothing to drive them so they get sucked into negative behaviors and patterns. A LOT of Adults are not much better.

Watch the suicide rates. Thats a symptom. If suicide rates are skyrocketing things like random shootings are going to increase heavily. People develop the notion of nothing to lose and will lash out at the world for their own unhappiness, lack of purpose....whatever.

Personal level we Homeschool to bypass all this cultural manipulation going on. Its the only solution I could come up with that was realistic that my wife and I could get a handle of my kids brain development. Lots goes into that of course and its not perfect/easy but its the best we can do. As much of a pain as it is to Homeschool its just part of keeping the right priorities in order and I very much play the long game. I try to encourage others to do the same but you have to give up a lot and make sacrifices. You wont see my kids doing stuff like this shooter. They shoot for recreation of course but we have done a pretty good job so far instilling them with the mentality of respecting themselves and others...and life in general. We do a lot of nature based activities and play sports though.

I dont know what this kids personal homelife situation was/is but I can speculate. Stuff like this does not happen in a vaccume. If anyone has a kid with emotional or hostility problems its probably best not to let them sit around playing violent shoot em up video games all day and put them on prescription meds. That kind of repetative environment is going to lead to these things happening.

As far as legislating guns rights away. Thats pretty useless IMO. Bunch of feel good nonsense to push political agendas. Its the equivilant of putting a bandaid over an infected wound. People fall for it though so we will see how this plays out. This close to election time nothing would suprise me. Antigun type candidates dont have a lot to really run on so I could see this being used to make a lot of noise and try to rally the base to show up in Novemeber. Gun culture in NC is very strong though so I dont see more regulation getting a whole lot of support.

Ah, bummer.

I see these things sometimes and they inspire me to sit down and have a talk with my daughters. With them, I worry more about anxiety and possible suicide than the "I'm unhappy and am going to take a bunch of random people down with me." mentality.

I feel like it might be time to have government funded parenting classes that are mandatory for new parents. We are to the point where we have people who weren't raised right raising their own kids; maybe several generations of this by now. To me, that's the root cause of all this. I keep thinking back to my grandpa. He was raised in another era, (born in 1917) and got a single shot 22LR bolt action rifle when he was 12. The boys all had guns and were partly responsible for feeding the family. His younger brother got my great granddad's 12 ga. shotgun and I'm told he often brought in rabbits and pheasant for dinner.

They were two of 9 kids raised on a farm. Just imagine, today a 22 at 12! If that happened, the parents would be immediately locked up, no matter how responsible the kid was. Now, some of us feel that NO ONE should be able to have a gun or that the only solution is for ONLY government to have guns.

I'm raising my daughter so that she is trustworthy with a gun already at 10. She will never do something like this, but I worry about her safety when she gets to high school in four years or so.

What's a fudd?

The thing that gets me is that when those sheep reflexively agree to give up rights like high capacity magazines because it "sounds reasonable", if we point out that he only shot 7 people and that could easily have been done with a "low capacity" magazine. Blank stare; they just don't think about it. They're reacting from the gut only; no critical thinking.

Lots of assumptions about the shooter and family being tossed out that don't seem to fit this incident.

Until more is learned about why a middle class, apparently happy, reasonably well liked 15 year old shot his older brother and a handful of apparently random adults we'll close this and leave it open focused on the Activism advice given on responses to Anti exploitation of the tragedy.
