So I was told by a store owner that my father (obviously above the age of 21) could gift a handgun to me (under 21) and that I could keep it in my house and unloaded in my car in a locked case and can’t carry it. Is that correct? I looked at the state code (Section 724) and from what I’ve read I can’t. Wonder if anyone else has heard about this though.

I did a couple minutes of research and it looks like under federal law you are OK, however Iowa law prohibits the transfer. IA code 724.22 subsection 5 allows a person under 21 to posses a handgun under direct supervision of parent/ guardian/spouse. Direct supervision means a physical presence near the supervised person and not just some sort of all encompassing “direct supervision”. As mentioned above I only did a brief search and maybe someone else has better guidance for you.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but honestly the fact that you were able to research the law and find the relevant code and come to the right answer is pretty impressive.
