Anyone know if this what S&W calls their clearcoat finish that is known for pealing off, or is this the new updated finish that they are applying to all the 637's and 642's that get sent back to them?

You cannot just glassbead an aluminum frame weapon. It must be either anodized or sealed in some other manner, otherwise the aluminum will oxidize.
I would be willing to bet that S&W went to work on a solution pretty darn quick when all those silver aluminum j-frames started showing up in their repair shop.

    Just my humble $.02 :D
