glenfield 30A advice

Just saw a Glenfield 30A at a pawn shop with a Marlin 4x scope (made in Japan) mounted. the rings are crap, but the rifle is in good shape. Very few minor rust spots (no pitting) that should come off easily and some dings in the wood but nothing that can't be touched up... I need a winter project and thought this might do. It is marked $240 but I think they will go $200 cash. Seem reasonable? Should I offer less? I don't have a lever and thought this would be a good intro.

These days, if you can get a 336 style for $200 in good shape as you say, you should definitely jump on it, IMO. Two years ago, no. Things have changed. The scope is just a small bonus.

forgot to add that this is a pre-saftey model... but forgot the get the serial number to date it.

went back in and looked at it, very dirty but would clean up nice. The stock would need to be refinished. I offered $180 and they countered with $225, I said $200 and they said $225. I thanked them for there time and walked out. guess I will have to keep looking to fill my lever action need/desire.

check on it again in a week or two... they may change their mind. Offer a little less.

A 336 of any flavor is a good thing.

I'd buy it at $225.00 in a heart beat. The scope is worth $25 - $50 maybe more.

I think you did the right thing. In fact I would have insisted on $200.00 out the door.

Dealing with pawn shops is kind on an art. First you have to figure out what they probably paid for the rifle. And then offer them what you thing will let them make a small profit. Make sure that you mention that you will be paying in cash.

Like you, this time of year I like to find an old rifle to fix up as a project. You just have to keep looking around to find a pawn shop that is willing to make a small fast profit rather than holding on to something forever to make a big profit.

Remember 336s are very common and you will find another one before long. You did good.
