Hi all
I recall reading some where that the USMC was using Glock 19s in some capacity. Has anyone seen one? Are they marked differently then a standard Glock 19?

Thanks
WB

Haven't heard of the Marines using them or adopting them but I know the special forces are allowed to use them.

In recent years the Glock has become preferred across the American military services. The Marine Special Operations Command has selected Glock 19s for its elite Raider unit, and even Delta has transitioned to the Glock 19
While the Sig Sauer P226 is used by many militaries and agencies worldwide, one of the most famous users of the pistol is the U.S. Navy SEALs, which used the P226 up until they switched to the Glock 19 around 2015

Yes. They are used by MARSOC (Marine Special Ops Command) and probably in the recon community as well. The various 1911 based pistols have gone the way of the dodo in the USMC, after considerable time and effort. 9mm Glocks are also used within army SF, Ranger Regiment, and by Naval Special Warfare, as well as other units in the specops community. I don't think there are any in the conventional US mil. I don't recall any special markings on the Glock 19's we had when I was on active duty 10 years ago.

The Raiders use the Glock 19. For a good while, they used both the G19 and Colt 1911 with the rail and tan Cerakote (I think Cerakote). However, I believe they did away with the 1911 and only use the G19. I do not believe they use the Glock 19x though.

Last time checked the Corps carries the greatest military sidearm in human history, the Colts M1911A1.

They are in a khaki camo color and have the new glow sights. Makes me proud to know those men are armed so well. I would not want a Glock if I were in their shoes.

The attempt at a USMC 1911 was a short lived experiment. No one liked them. As late as 2005 my BIL was carrying a Beretta while serving in Iraq with USMC. But lots of specialized units in all branches have had the flexibility to use stuff they buy for their own use. And the G19 was pretty common. With the adoption of the Sig M17 and M18 they may well standardize and drop Glock.

Apparently the guys with sand in their shoes disagree.

Yeah, actually having to rely on a weapon to save your life in a harsh environment tends to make you choose a pistol based on facts and merits rather than romantic delusions. I love a quality 1911 for fun range time, but I'm not carrying one in the desert when I expect to be shot at.

One thing about JSOC, is they can approve a list of weapons to choose from. The Glock 19 was accepted as one of those accepted weapons for MARSOC and others. One example I know of is Navy Seals can carry Sig P226, Beretta M9 (maybe still), 1911s, Glocks, and many others. Rank and file Marines are more limited to the M9, transitioning to the M18. I do not believe the G19 is widely accepted among traditional Marine units.

Might check again...
Marine Corps Systems Command began fielding the M18 Modular Handgun System in September. This striker-fired, semi-automatic, 9-mm pistol is based on the Sig Sauer Model P320. The M18 will replace all other pistols in the Marine Corps inventory, including the M9, M9A1, M45A1 and M007.

Why wouldn't you want a Glock(or SIG320/M18) in their shoes??

According to the most recnt announcements in 2020, the M18 will replace the M007, M9, and any remaining Colts but not the G19s used by MEU(SOC).

MARSOC isn't part of JSOC. I have never seen anyone from NAVSPECWAR (except maybe attached/support personnel) using a M9 , and I worked with them off and on since the early 90's. I have seen them carrying Sig, HK, and Glock. The only 1911 pistols I have seen in the navy were vintage ones used by security personnel on ships or by seabees as a sidearm in Africa- not because they were "special", just because their stuff was really old. I have never seen a Glock pistol anywhere in the DOD outside of the SOF community.

The "new" .45 was big news 8 years ago.

It came up short, however.

I have seen four things.

The finish was not durable.

They wanted a more concealable handgun.

They decided they wanted more penetration (likely referring to barrier penetration).

They preferred higher capacity.

They had been using both. Ammunition commonality was undoubtedly part of the decision to drop the .45.

Lots of old and inaccurate info in this thread. The M45 has all but left front-line service and the Glock 19 has been used by MARSOC since 2015.

Also the P226 is no longer issued by NSWC. The Glock 19 (originally Gen 3, but now the 19MOS and other variants) began replacing both the P226 and P239 back in 2015 as well.

The Glock 26MOS has also found its way into service.

I remember when those where the HOT item. So many at the LGS were waiting in line to spend big money on getting one. Pretty much just a Cera Coated Colt 1911 for to much money. Govt contracts at work again!

You think they were expensive then, try and find a USMC marked one under 5k now-a-days.

The issue was Colts cerakote really really sucked.. I have a M45A1 Custom Shop (Basically same gun) when you look at it wrong crap peels off. Colt screwed up, period the end.

Does anybody know why?

Reliability? Field Performance?

The fundamentals of the design- SA, weight, 7-8 round capacity, .45 recoil, etc, should have known been before adoption, and are not a "surprise".

Probably cost and ease of service. I don’t see any advantage to a 1911 given .mil context.

I would love to have a retired USMC M45, just because of what it is. I do have a Springfield TRP operator, which my $ says is at least as good as the M45.
