I started typing this up in the thread I found about the Gen 5 Glocks, but I figure I probably shouldn't clog up that thread with this.

I attended a Glock day that a local gun store put on a couple weeks ago and got to try out the new gen 5 glocks, both the 19 and the 17. I think they've more or less resolved my biggest complaint with the gen 4s- the trigger. Whatever combination of changes they've made to the trigger components and the firing pin block have made the trigger pull infinitely better in my opinion. I've never gotten used to the gen 4 trigger, but I shot what was (for me) a very nice group with the gen 5 the very first time I picked it up. As part of going to that range day I'm able to buy a new gen 5 from that same store at a "special price" if I buy it before the end of the month. I don't know what that special price is, but I don't imagine the discount is huge. I'm also kind of wondering if we'll see a glock "gen 5.1" or something in the near future that fixes the frame not matching up with the slide, or maybe even removes the magwell cutout.

Based off how well I shot it, plus the fact that I already have a bunch of glock mags and a holster that should fit a gen 5 G19, I was planning on turning around and buying one almost right away, but then the M&P 2.0 compact got announced and now I'm conflicted.

I have an M&P 1.0 full size and I really like it. I always wished S&W would release a version the same size as the G19, since I find that size a perfect balance between shootability and concealability, and now they have. In addition they made the grip texture nice and aggressive, and also improved the trigger. It's also cheaper than the glock (even at it's preorder price at Brownells, and I'm sure that price will drop quickly like the full size M&P did), comes with metal sights straight from the factory, and (at least for me) is much more ergonomic. S&W also has a rebate going on until the end of the month where you get two free mags, a mag loader and some ammo with any new M&P handgun.

All that basically distills down to me wondering which one do you all think I should get? I've got two weeks to decide if I want to take advantage of either that "special price" on the glock or the free mags rebate for the S&W.

For anyone else in the market for one of these, which are you leaning towards and why?

Didn't S&W just announce a G19 size M2.0?
If so that sounds like what you really want.

They did, but it's supposed to start shipping next week if I understood the announcement Brownell's made correctly.

I'll admit, the more I think about it the more I lean to the M&P, but I'd like to hear some opinions first, someone might bring something up that sways me either way. At any rate I'm going to wait at least a week and a half before buying either, I'd like for some youtube reviewers to try out the new M&P and make sure it doesn't have any launch issues like some 1.0 M&P's did. I doubt they will since the full size of the 2.0 seems to only get good reviews, but it's probably better to just wait a week or two and find out.

I have a Gen 3 19 and a M&P 2.0 full size 9mm. I looked at the Gen 5 19 last week and thought Glock did a great job with it. That being said, the M&P has quickly replaced the 19 as my primary carry gun. The 19 has been great as it's never malfunctioned and I shoot it well, but I prefer the trigger, ergonomics and grip angle of the M&P. You won't go wrong with either, but I'd go with the M&P.

I saw the Gen5 19 at one LGS for $599.00, I saw it at another LGS for $629.00. I think the new trigger pull is a nice improvement, but both of these had the standard sights. Once the hype dies down, the price should come down, and availability of the NS and AmeriGlo sight versions should improve. I'd be a buyer for one with the AmeriGlo sights for about $550.00, until then I'm fine to keep shooting & carrying my Gen3 19.

I own one Glock (G21) and I like it quite a bit, but I could never quite warm up to the G19. I do love my M&P9 FS, and even though the new 2.0 "compact" isn't significantly smaller I may buy one anyway. I was considering buying a second FS as a backup or nightstand gun, but I might make it the "compact" instead.

I know it seems as if everybody loves that size, and I've been hearing folks clamor for a G19 sized M&P over several forums for many years. However, while I think it is a good size if you are only going to own one gun (are there any of you guys/gals out there that only have one pistol?), I think S&W did a better job with sizing to begin with than Glock did.

I think the standard M&P is a better "duty" size than either G17 or G19, and I think the original M&P Compact is a better concealment gun than the G19 and a better shooting size than the G26.

The analogy to the G19 size guns I always use is the quick, athletic college defensive end. When he gets to the NFL he's a "tweener". He's too slow and not athletic enough to play linebacker, and he's too small to play defensive end. The G19 is not really the best choice as a duty/range/competition gun, and there are also better options for concealment guns. However, if you've only got money or space for one gun, well then go for it.

I really want the M&P2.0 compact. The 2.0's feel so good, but I can't justify another fullsize striker 9mm. But I can rationalize a purchase for a midsize "jack of all trades" 9mm.

I went to the gun store over lunch at work today and it turns out their discount is better than I expected. Looks like I can get a standard glock for around $540 all in, OTD. Not sure how much the Ameriglo sights will add to that but I do like them a lot, more than the glock night sights, and certainly better than the plastic garbage sights they come with.

Either way that price brings it down more into the realm of the M&P 2.0. I'm sure the M&P will drop like a rock in price pretty quickly, but when I factor in how I already have glock holsters and mags, I think the price difference basically washes out.

I'm looking to purchase a carry gun, and while yeah it's a common refrain, the G19 size is just ideal for that, at least for someone with my body size and type. The "big enough to fight with, small enough to conceal" mantra holds true with it for me. I have a Beretta 92fs, which I love, for when I want to shoot a full sized gun. I don't open carry either (although maybe I should...) so I don't really plan on carrying a duty sized gun.

I've got a Gen 4 G19. I love it. Had the 2.0 Compact been available while I was looking for my Goldilocks gun, though, it's entirely possible that I'd own one of those instead.

Given that neither of these are on the market in force. The only answers you will receive are fanboyism and that doesn't tell you anything!

I would wait till the beta testers (first adopters) test em out personally.. Both companies have had issues with "new" models.

Well, I've had a generation 2 Glock 19 for years, but I'd be tempted to swap it out for the S&W M&P 2.0 compact. I like my wife's generation 1 S&W M&P "compact" a lot. If the new pistol is an improvement over that, it sounds very good as the ergonomics of even the smaller pistol beats the G19 all day, and I shoot it marginally better.

I have the Gen 5 G-19 and the S&W M&P 2.0 Compact, between the two the 19.5 is the winner, but the 2.0 is a close runner up, both are worth looking at, I liked the 19.5 so much I bought the 17.5 too...you cant go wrong with either make...

Have both a G19 Gen 3 and Gen 4. Spent a lot of $$ fixing little things I did not like (ie. sights, magazine release, grip angle, slide stop, etc.)

Picked up an M&P 2.0C a few months ago and put 2,000 rnds through it. After the first 1,000 rounds I upgraded trigger with an Apex DAEK kit because I didn't like the shape of the hinged trigger, curved too much.

The Glocks are now second string. I personally much prefer the ergonomics of the M&P 2.0C. Just fits my hand better and points more natural.
