It's really not that deep. The FBI determined the range of penetration and the ammo designers tailored bullets to expand at this depth. So they all basically work the same, more or less, within a bullet design.

Sure, in gel, a .40 might go a little deeper or expand a few hundreths more but they are all effectively equal by design (again, within brand/bullet type, there are outliers and oddballs).

Of course, things like shooting through barriers and/or accuracy at range are factors not mentioned.

It's not that bullet design only brought up the 9mm, changes in effective stop philosophy just put them all on the same field

The .45 ACP is already a large bullet with lots of momentum. The best of the .45's expand larger and give more chance to cut through vessels and organs. Because of it's greater momentum the .45 has a better chance of breaking bone.

For deer sized game and larger (say a horse) a .45 Colt (loaded to less than 1000 fps) would do a much better job than say .38 or 9mm. I know as I've hunted larger deer with .45 Colt.

Agreed. But the argument it's equal is simply the fact that it meets the FBI requirements in the same manner others do. Agree, disagree, it is what it is.

I like 9mm for carry because I'm about 30% faster with it over .45 on the same platform, and can get rapid fire hits with much less effort and concentration. This might be helpful in a chaotic situation (faster hits easier) or it may not.

So I give up 10-15% total expansion for an extra bullet or two in any given second. Might it be the difference, who can know, but it works for me. I don't think any of the major duty calibers are best or worse, all have advantages and drawbacks, and all meet the FBI specs with the right ammo (which is, naturally, designed to do just that).

Momentum is certainly important in hunting, I agree, but against 2 legged threats maximum penetration is less important. In the woods or field I like cast 200 grain in 10mm or 255 in .45 pushed as fast as I can go within pressure.

Old Dog. Don’t get yourself mixed up. I have never seen you as a Glock Hater. Your more, one of those guys that sees them as a good gun, but you have others you like better.
Glock Haters are those that go to topics on Glocks just to let people know how much they don’t like Glocks. And they don’t stop there. They post repeatedly saying nothing more then they hate Glocks.

I guess you haven’t seen the Gen5 Glocks yet.

Yes I've seen them but don't feel the need to lose a bunch of money selling/trading my SD9VE on one. And I already have several plastic 9mms. tom.

The only Glocks I've ever owned were Gen four. I've never even noticed the finger grooves and I have zero interest in any Glocks but the 4 we currently own.
