Hi all, i'm sure you get this question about a 1000 times a day. However, let me describe my circumstances. i would like to try my hand at IDPA and am looking at a pistol for such applications as well as general range use. I currently conceal a Glock 23, and may or may not use this weapon for carry. The only reason I am considering them is because 9mm is cheaper for me to reload, and competing with one, the savings really adds up compared to the .40. Any help you guys could give me would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
Since you already carry a 23 and are looking for a range / competition gun, then I agree with the comments to get a 17 over a 19. However, I have to ask why aren't you considering a 34? It would give you even longer sight radius than the 17, more weight out front for reduced muzzle climb, better stock trigger, stock extended slide release lever, and stock extended mag release; all in a pistol that still qualifies for use in the stock and / or limited classes of most competitive shooting organizations.
 
a 40-9 conversion barrel for the 23 would be cheapest;)
But personally would get a 34 if I were looking to get into competition.
 
You already have holsters and such for the G19, and could compete with it and carry it, which is great. I'd go that way. If you are more into the game than the training aspect, G34.
 
Why not get a 9mm barrel and mags in your 23? Cheaper, and you get practice using your carry gun. If you are going to go with a 17, just get the 34. You get the same frame, but a longer sight radius.

And with Glocks, the question isn't "which one?" it's "which one first?"
 
I vote 19, I like the 17, but I personally shoot the 19 better. I do like the 9mm conversion thought for the 23.
 
I wouldn't buy anything yet.

Take your G23 to a match or three. Get a feel for it, decide if you enjoy competing enough to want to focus on the sport itself, and take advantage of shooting your EDC in the meantime.

If you decide you want to play to win, pick up a G34. If you want to continue to dabble but it's not serious, a G19 is probably best.

A few matches of IDPA with the .40 shouldn't break the bank. Do yourself a favor and try your hand at it before dropping $500+ on what may end up being the wrong gun. If you wait until you know exactly what will fill your needs, odds are very low you'll regret the purchase.
 
G17 is great pistol for IDPA, G34 even better. Many compete with their carry weapon, like a G19, me, I carry a CCO size 1911, but I compete with a G34. Besides IDPA there is USPSA, and GSSF matches. In GSSF I use a G17, G34 and shoot in two divisions.

I think this is excellent advice.

Now is a bad time to be in market for a pistol. Just about everything is way over priced. If you can shoot your G23 for a year, you can check out what the other guys are shooting, maybe get a chance to try their guns, and you'll get a better idea as to what you'd like/need for competition. Hopefully, after a year, prices will have dropped back to a reasonable range and you'll have more knowledge and money by then.
