I've narrowed down my new 40 s&w purchase to the glock 23 (gen 3 or 4) and the XD40. They both feel good in my hand so I'm not sure which to buy. Both guns are brand new. The glock with night sights and 3 mags is 393 plus tax and the XD with 2 mags is 450 total. Any advice on reliability, durability and the better deal is greatly appreciated

Both are good guns. Glock has a longer track record, but that doesn't mean it's better - just had more time to prove its good. If the grip safety is a non-issue for you, I can't see much difference.
Personally, I don't see enough benefit with XD over Glock (I have a XDm because I like some of the features on the M), for the price and with the night sights I'd go with the Glock.

I have both a Glock 19 and Springfield Armory XD9. Essentially, that's your two choices, only in 9mm rather than .40 S&W. To me, the Glock is a little lighter and thus carries better. The Glock also has a lower bore axis and seems to have a bit less muzzle flip. Conversely, the Springfield feels better in my hand and has a grip safety if that makes you more comfortable. On stock guns, I think the XD sights are better than the Glock's. That's a non-issue if the Glock you're considering already has night sights. At bottom, I tend to like my Glock slightly more than the XD, but not by much. The price you're seeing for the XD is about right, but it's hard to get a Glock and three mags under $400 without a LEO discount. If that also includes night sights, that's an absolute steal that I wouldn't turn down.
I prefer the XD, I owned a subcompact one for a while. But, spending $50 less dollars and getting an extra mag might swing me over to the Glock if I didn't already have a preference.

I like the idea of the grip safety on a carry gun but that's my personal preference. My experience with both guns has been excellent though I am more familiar with the Glock 19 than the 23.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the Glock 23 can also run .357 sig and 9mm with the appropriate barrel and mag conversions. Please check with a knowledgeable source before trying it but should this be the case it really means that the Glock is more versatile.
I have dealt with customer service at both companies and both, from my perspective are good.
I did have a problem with my latest Glock purchase - a newer Gen 3 19. It was ejecting casings back into my face. I sent it to Glock and they changed out the ejector with a newer one (different number stamped on it) and now it works fine. It seemed to be a known problem from my discussion with the rep.
While Glock seems to have had some issues as of late Springfield just seems to be getting better and better.

I wouldn't see why the XD couldn't use barrel conversions, but I'm not sure if they exist. I know they exist for Glock. My XDm came with 2 mags, but I got another 3 free because of a special that was being run at the time (usually they run it later in the year).
I think I kinda said this, but its right on the money. For the extra mag and the night sights, you would still be getting the Glock for more than $100 less than I'd pay for a NIB one without those features.

I've had a XD-40 since 2007 & I have shot my next door neighbors Glock 23 on more than one occasion. I agree that they are both good guns. You can find aftermarket barrels to allow you to shoot more than 1 caliber from either. Accessories are easier to find for the Glock but there is stuff available for the XD you just might have to order it from online instead of being able to find something at the local gunshop.

If you have the extra money & there is a rental range nearby it might pay you to rent one of each & run a box of ammunition through them. I don't believe either is a bad choice it just depends on which works better for you. That Glock does sound like a really good deal though.

I sold my XD. I think both have the potential to be equally reliable, but I don't want the silly grip safety. Just one more thing to get in the way or go wrong. They are far more likely to prevent the gun from firing when you need it to fire than they are at preventing the gun from firing when you don't want it to fire. Without the grip safety I'd rate them much closer
Once you master it the Glock grip angle is an improvement over the straighter grips styles.
I like the Glock trigger better. While heavy, it is very crisp. The XD had a softer, mushy trigger that I could never quite figure out when it would fire.

Both guns go bang when you need them to, so you're not going to go wrong. That said, Glocks have a lower bore axis which is a big advantage when shooting the 40S&W. I'd get the 23.

I bought a drop in 9mm conversion barrel for my XD40sc at EFK Firedragon. I use the same .40 mags and occasionally get a failure to feed in this configuration so while I wouldn't carry it this way it does make for a bit cheaper plinking.

Can't argue the possibility of that any more than I could argue that it's impossible to get killed by lightning on a cloudless day.
Any factual evidence though?
The not knowing when it will fire is usually a great big plus for me.
In slow fire with an unfamiliar gun, sure.* With practice, a predictable trigger is a good thing, esp. for fast shooting.
*My very first group with an LCP is still my best... But it took like 20 minutes waiting for the shots to go off. With practice, I have gotten faster, but the accuracy has suffered.
