Glock Firing Pin Replacement?

I have a G19 (Ser# AGMxxx) and I see some discussion of a "factory replacement" of the firing pin.

Can anyone enlighten my about this?

I purchased it as a Glock factory refurb in 1996-7 and have never had it apart farther than field strip.

Any help is appreciated.

1) Call Smyrna, Ga.

2) Get a copy of the Armorer's book and do it yourself.
It's not too difficult to remove the firing pin mechanism, provided you have the proper punch tool (Glock sells theirs for about $4).

I had never had my Glock slide apart before and needed to put in an extrapower FP spring in it and downloaded/printed out the instructions, and it was a piece of cake (with the punch)

I seriously doubt that glock would give you a copy of their armorers manual. It is super easy to take the slide apart and clean/replace parts if need be. Call glock and ask if your gun needs the firing pin upgrade, if not don't worry about it, if so then you can a.) replace the parts yourself, b.) take it to a glock armorer, or c.) send it back to them. I read an article about this a while back and it is more than the firing pin that needs to be replaced, I forget what all parts it is, but I'm sure that Glock can tell you. Either way, your gun should be fine if was refurbished. All you need to take apart your Glock is a 3/32 punch, or a similarly sized allen wrench or screwdriver, or even the cap from a pen if you are in a pinch.

I am more interested in the "why" than the "how".

Can anybody tell me why they upgraded the firing pin? Is it a safety or reliability issue?

Glock will most definitely NOT give/sell you a copy of their armorers manual. They require you to take their authorized armorers course and for that you need to get a letter of recommendation from your local PD.

And I'm having memory problems right now; I don't recall a firing pin issue recently...

there is actually a recall for this, and Glock will replace these parts for free. the problem is the firing pin plunger would sometimes not catch the firing pin, and in many cases when chambering a round the gun would fire, and sometimes would actually fire a burst.

If you find a local armorer, they will do it, and send the bill to Glock, IIRC

If it's a true Factory Refurb from '97 you should be all set.

The '92 recall was for Glocks with only two letter serial # prefixes not 3 like yours, FWI.

Go to Glockmeister.com for complete instructions with pics. It's listed in the TECH area. Also shows a pic of the old type striker(firing pin) and new type so you will be able to check for yourself. Takes about 3 min to remove the striker from your Glock. Be sure to clean the striker channel while you have it out but do not lube. Also keep in mind as you do the procedure that compressed springs are involved.

I never had the confidence to do all of this myself, but I just got through the slide dis/reassembly and it was a great experience.

As it turns out, my G19 was all up to date (albeit a bit grungy) and everything is as it should be.

I had to send my MK series G19 back (on their dime ) for the updates and they had it back to me in about two or three weeks. Your's being a factory re-furb means that all the updates were done at that time.

Your Glock was grungy?? But I thought that bore snake you used cleaned everything perfectly??? It's a good thing those Glocks are reliable...

bore snake doesn't get the firing mechanism clean. Doesn't even touch it.

Still, I want one of those...

Most of the time they aren't really needed but the thicker
"Caterpillar" type pipe-cleaners like Brownell's sells are just about perfect for Cleaning out the striker channel, etc., FWIW
