I'm pretty sure it'll say Gen 4 on the slide if it is a Gen 4.

Gen3 G23 https://us.glock.com/products/model/g23

The Gen 4 guns have a dual recoil spring assembly, a larger mag release button, and different grip texture.

Overlooked the generic generation question, I thought it was a Gen 3 vs Gen4. At some point finger grooves came in. They were not there at Gen1.

Gen 3 were the first with finger grooves and accessory rail. The older Gen 2s will will not have those features.

$400. a good deal?
Depends upon the condition and any accessories that come with it.

You might want to go to cdnninvestments and summitgunbroker and see what their closeouts are going for.

I got my Glock 19 from Summit Gun Broker, back when guns in VG to EXC condition were in the low $300s.

Huntsman, I just bought a like-new Gen 4 Glock 27 with all 3 mags, backstops, hard case, tool, etc. (everything that comes with a new one) for $400, which I thought was a good deal.

So, $400 for a Gen 2 would depend entirely on condition. If it's in really good condition, I think $400 is not a bad deal - probably not a great one, but not a bad one either.

In the environment we are in right now (with all the fear about what our dictator will impose by royal edict), I just don't see ANY Glocks selling for below $400 in my area (DFW, Texas area). What somebody paid 3 or 4 years ago is irrelevant.

And keep in mind there are some people who think their Gen 2 Glocks are better than the Gen 3 or Gen 4 versions. So, if it's in good shape and you like it, go for it.

A used Gen 2 model 23 is likely a police trade in. These are selling on many sites for between $330 and $350.

Less wiggle room on used G23's. Just not as many around. The G22's police trades are still cheap. Summit Gunbroker has the G23's for $355 with 2 mags & the G22's for $315 with 2 mags as well.

I actually know the back story on this gun, it came from a gun collector who passed away and was his CC gun that he bought new but for the last several years has just been a safe queen.

Thanks again for the input, what I know about Glock is practically nothing and when it comes to .40S&W I know even less. :)

Most of Glock's problems revolved around the early 40SW guns as they were not designed for 40. Bad chamber support, moving to 2 pin frames, weapon lights, etc. etc. If I were in the market for a 40 it would only be a Gen 4.

Thats entirely up to you. I just gave you my opinion, and you know what they say about those.
