Aiken Count Sheriff says thief broke into patrol car

(Aiken) Oct. 13, 2005 - Theft has hit close to home for Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt.

Sheriff Hunt is offering a $200 reward for the return of a Glock, Model 27, 40 caliber pistol, which he says was stolen from his patrol vehicle Tuesday night.

He says the theft happened during a series of automobile break-ins in Graniteville. "This should serve as an example that no one is immune from crime, and we all must take necessary precautions to secure our property," Sheriff Hunt said.

Four cases of breaking and entering were reported at homes on Laurel Drive, Old Powerhouse Road and Prince William Drive, in Graniteville. Officials are also investigating additional break-ins elsewhere in Aiken County.

Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office: (800) 922-9709.

Another law enforcement agency head who apparently chooses to leave his sidearm in his vehicle vice carry it on his person ... I can just see Chief Kerlikowske (Seattle PD) giving the Sheriff a call to commiserate with him ... fine examples for their departments' personnel, indeed.

Didn't do it.
But SHAME ON HIM for leaving it out.

Why shouldn't I leave my pistol in my cruiser? It's locked...dark...and no one is going to break into a cruiser. Dah! Must be a new guy. You haven't been excited/pissed until you chase a paddy wagon (with the lights and siren turned on by the thief) that was just stolen from the parking area of a hospital ER. Many cruisers have been broken into (on and off duty). Most officers leave only the basics inside.

I recall the time a thief broke into a marked police cruiser, disassembled the PD-issued Remington 870, slipped it out of the (improperly installed by city mechanics) locked gun rack, and disappeared with it!
