A buddy and I are planning an elk hunting trip to Colorado later this year. We will both be using the Remington 700 in 30.06. Is 185 grain bullets enough for Elk?

Plenty. Many an elk has been killed by a 130 grainer out of a .270, altho a 150 is probably a better choice.

180 grains is about the standard around here, I use 165 grain Grand Slams.

Shot placement is the key. Elk's average about 500-600 lbs., less for cows (although a trophy bull may go 1000 lbs.).

I agree with Larry Ashcraft. And if you want a little more power out of 180's, Federal High Energy rounds up the velocity and energy.

Yup. .30-06 180s'll do 'em fine.

I'm shooting 165 Barnes out of an essential .300 Savage/.30-40 Krag.

BTW, bring some warm clothes & get used to no air. ;)
