Going hog hunting

I going hog hunting this weekend, and I'm going to take my 1895gs 45-70. should I us 300gr hp or 350gr fp?

You can kill a hog with a .223. I shot one this summer with a .308 (150 gr bullet). 350 grs seems like overkill to me.

Either one would work fine I took my last hog with a buffalo bore 300gr HP out of my 444 Marlin. What load are you using? 45-70 loads vary in power so much that bullet weight doesn't always mean much.

I hand load Remington 300gr hp on top of 41gr oh IMR4198 with 1800fps. My 350gr Hornady ft loads is 42.7gr same at 1800fps.

either one would be fine. My buff bore loads claim 2150fps, no chrono but knowing them they are understating things.

Edit: out of curiosity, is your gun Ballard or Micro-groove, and if it is micro-groove what bullet dia. do you use?

Every 45-70 bullet I've used on hogs has punched cleanly through(from any angle). Juiced my 300 grain HP's to 2200 FPS this year to try and get that grenade effect. We'll see.
P.S. I do use the meat but always ruin the shoulders anyway as that is where the off button is.

I prefer to shoot them in the ear or the eye. If you can put the bullet there, it really doesn't matter what caliber you use (centerfire). Either bullet-weight should be fine. My dad shoots them with 45gr .223. My wife and I shot a pair of roasters this weekend in a matter of about 4 seconds. It was fun. Both of these were shot with 130gr .270Win.

You can shoot them in the neck and save the shoulders. With a 45/70 it will equal DRT.

I would use whatever my rifle was sighted in for. You need to shoot the same grain ammo as ballistics will be different, especially with a 45-70. I generally use 405 grain in mine because that is what shoots best in my rifle and that is what I have my scout scope set up for. Either round you asked about will work nicely, good luck with your hunt.
