Going with the savage scout rifle

Personally, I would buy/build the rifle that I wanted, not Cooper or anyone else.

I'm cool with Cooper not being a Savage fan. The savage will suit my needs just as well as any Cooper approved scout. Again, the big draw for me was the sights.

I own both a Savage 11 Scout and a Steyr. The Steyr is much better made, which is not too surprising given that the Steyr cost more than twice as much. The second generation 11 wouldn't be a bad basis for a budget scout. The current 12 has been altered to fit Ruger's definition of a Scout instead of Cooper's.

I would love to know how the Savage Scouts were found wanting at Gunsite, but I haven't found a citation anywhere. My point was not to criticize the Savage as much as to point out the foolishness of presuming to say what Cooper would say if he were alive without first checking what he did say when he was alive.

Never met the man and couldn't care less what he thought of the Savage "scout" rifle anyway. What I read above sounds like a ringing endorsement for a rifle he had a hand in developing, and disdain for a company that would dare produce a good scout rifle at 1/3 the price.
