Good 22LR pistol for the range

I've been shooting my HK P30 at the range more with my 17 year old son. He loves to shoot but that boy can go through some rounds.

Would like to acquire a nice accurate 22LR to supplement my ammunition use. I looked at a very lightly used Beretta Neos today and its "Cute". Feels very comfortable. Also like the feel of the Ruger MKIII . Looking for some experienced opinions on whether one of these choices is better than the other. Neither are real expensive but the Neos is $199 used and it looks very lightly used.. Gentlemen that helped me seemed to imply he preferred the Ruger..

I can't speak as to the NEOS, but I have a Stainless MK III Hunter, and it's an awesome gun. Probably run you more than the NEOS, but in my opinion, you get a lot of gun for the money. Solid steel, great grips, outstanding accuracy. I've put a little under 5K worth of rounds through mine, with nary an issue.

The Ruger will still be running long after the Neos has died & gone to it's great reward.

If you want a Buck Rogers ray-gun, the Neos does look more like one I guess!

Get a Ruger Single Six. Loading and unloading that ought to slow your son down a little bit.

Folks who have the Neos like them. I don't like the looks of the pistol and haven't been interested.

The Ruger MKIII, S&W 22A and Browning Buck Mark are all accurate and reliable .22 pistols. The 22A is probably the best price. I have a slight preference for Rugers but I shoot my 22A and Buck Mark as often as I shoot my Rugers. I like them all.

The P22 is a winner for fun, small and light. However, it is a notch below the others in quality and ability to shoot accurately.

I have a single six and enjoy it. It's a great, fun shooter.

I couldn't solve the "which one?" question, so I have at least one of each, excluding the Neos.

My 22/45 heavy barrel target gun is wonderful. Accurate, ridiculously reliable.

It's not a PITA to take apart at all. Putting it back together is simple and easy -- IF you follow directions. Don't try to wing it.

If you have trouble, ask here. That's what I had to do and it was a lifesaver.

Go for the ruger

I vote for the Ruger, yes the learning curve is steep for taking it apart, but one you learn the process, you'll be fine.

The ruger will fare better on resale as well, as you can see...

Good - Neos
Better - S&W22A
Better still - Browning Buckmark
Best - Ruger MK...

I only have the S&W and the Browning, but based on guns I've shot/handled, the Ruger is a cut above the rest. My Browning is a little better fit and finish than my S&W. Both shoot great and are reliable.

I don't like the look of the Neos. I have no idea how they work/hold up/hold value.

I have a Walther P22 that seems okay after it went back to S&W right out of the box. I wouldn't recommend one since there are better guns for the money. I bought mine because I liked the way it looked and that shouldn't be the main reason behind a gun purchase.

I have since picked up a basic Ruger Mk III and will be picking up a MK II NRA special edition next week. Both were less expensive than the P22.

The Gun Shop

says that the Trigger pull on the Neos has not been as well received as that of the Ruger.

The Stainless Ruger feels and looks like it will last for decades. And judging by some of the responses you'd have trouble wearing it out..

I shoot it with my son and hopefully he'll shoot it with his !!!

I have been shooting Ruger MK II's for almost twenty years with no problems. I also have used a lightly modified MKII for competition. They are great .22's and something your son will be able to pass down to his children.

For the $, considering accuracy and reliability, the S&W A22 is hard to beat. Much less than a Ruger MK, although personally I like the Ruger heavy barrels. But if cost is a major consideration, take a look-see at the S&W. It might also fit your son's shooting hand well. Try it on.
