Buy a nice barrel and build your own. It's really fairly easy.

I'm game for that. I've built AR's but never uppers. Got any advice on getting started?

www.surplusammo.com has 300blk barrels on sale for 149. I dont know anything about these barrels so I cant say how good they are. www.Model1sales.com has a rifle kit minus stripped lower for $550 and upper receiver assemblies for $385 minus bolt group/ charging handle. I have used some model1 parts before and they worked good, but I have never bought through their web site. These are shaw barrels.

You'll need a vise block for the upper. I had success using one from"Squirrel Daddy" for $19 on Amazon. It's just a block of aluminium routed & drilled to pin on the upper - tighten the vise on the block, not the upper.

You'll also need a barrel wrench. Some hand guards use a proprietary one. Generics should work with anything good for a GI style nut. I used a Brownell's Combination Wrench - $25 with a LE/mil discount, $34 regular price. A torque wrench to use in combination with the barrel wrench is a good idea, but the acceptable range is fairly broad - depending on the source, you'll hear anywhere from 30 ft/lb to 75 ft/lb. Brownell's suggests that 30 or better is good to go.

Other than that, pretty much the same tools you use to build up a lower. There are videos at Brownell's that are pretty good & tutorials on ar15.com as well.

If you are on a budget, cosmetically blemished stripped uppers are generally available. PSA sells them for about $60, $50 when on sale. Free float hand guards can be pricey for name brands, but no-name generics can be had for under $100. GI style is probably the most affordable.

Alpha Shooting Sports has some affordable 300BLK barrels. Check over at 300BlkTalk for discount codes & folks who have bought from them.

I did this pistol using one of their barrels this past week...

Not really. I would ask around about barrels and buy what meets your needs. Accuracy, etc.

I bought an AR Stoner barrel from Midway USA. I have no idea who makes them. After some work I found a couple of loads it likes real well.

    This target
was shot at 100 yards with 110 Gr V-Max bullets. I also shot some at 300 yards, and after getting my drop figured visually, I hit an 8" steel plate 4 out of 5 times using a 6.5X20 scope. I like shooting my .300 BLK.

I bought a 16" Noveski. Well assembled. While the accuracy is not bad, it has not been what I hoped for , I am getting 1-1/2" at 100 yards with 125 Speer TNT and 155 AMAX. I have not found the magic combination as Walkalong has.

I am in the process of assembling an 18" Wilson Combat barrel upper. Waiting on some headspace gauges to select a bolt. We will see.

I also like shooting the 300 BLK.

Be careful with that type; Sometimes the barrel nuts require more torque to align that you should put on the pin blocks.

There are vise blocks that form fit the upper and sandwich it, which are better.

I personally use two pieces of soft pine and clamp the upper top and bottom in a vise. The picatinny top rail and the sides of the reciever on the bottom dig in and get a good bite on the soft wood. For A2 style, I still use wood blocks, but simply invert the upper and clamp the carry handle.

7075-T6 is tough and has good memory, but it's still possible to tweak it (or even fracture). It'd sure torque me off if I used one of those pin block vises and found the upper to be canted afterward.

DSA has the best price, quality for a 300BLK. You can get an upper less the BCG and CH for $320 or $335 for a stainless steel barrel. You can spend twice as much, but what have you gained?

Thanks for the very thorough list rsilvers.

I have no idea how to tell which one of those are good, which are over priced, etc. But I will investigate.

I think DSA is the best value (I have one). For absolute best quality at double the price, I think it would be a tie among AAC, Noveske, and Daniel Defense. The S&W option is interesting, but priced high enough that it's not far from those three premium options. Palmetto State Armory has an interesting one with a FN CHF barrel, but you really don't need a CHF, chrome-lined barrel for the fairly mild 300BLK cartridge. Building your own is relatively easy, but I would suggest factory assembled for someone who hasn't built an upper before.

Every time some new 300 BLK product comes out, or something is back in stock, I list it here: https://www.facebook.com/300aacblackout - so if you join the page you will be in the first group of people to know about it.

I've been thinking about getting this one for a while:

Normally I'm not a huge spikes fan but this package actually seems like a good value for what you get on the upper, even at $1,900. The reflex suppressor gives you about 11" of barrel length with the suppressor on.
