Post #1 got me some great advice re a gunsmith recommendation here at THR, so I'm looking for more with post #3.

There's a used but very good condition Vaquero (not New Vaquero) at a Turners nearby for $450. As these are getting harder to find, do you think this is a good deal? Or should I just stick with plan A and get a new Blackhawk? I guess what I'm asking is, is this something I should jump on if I ever plan to get an older Vaquero? This one's exactly what I'm looking for in that it's in 45LC with 5.5" barrel.

Thanks!

Jim

That's what I paid for mine a year or so ago and I've been VERY happy with it. It's fun to shoot, accurate, well built, and I feel it will serve many years as a great sidearm for hunting season.

That's a fair price for an "old" Vaquero. I prefer the feel of them over the New Vaqueros anyhow. I am actually selling a 5.5" original Vaquero with case-colored frame and a full leather Western rig that is heavily engraved , but it's a .357.

It's high in my opinion. What little info about it that's given doesn't indicate it's a special variation but if it's worth the price to you, that's all that matters isn't it? What's it's worth to anyone else is moot if it's what YOU want.

Once again, lots of great feedback -- thanks you guys. About the best justification I can come up with for getting it is, it's exactly what I would want in a Vaquero, and if I pass this one up, to get the same gun (pre 2005, 45 LC, 5.5" barrel) I'd likely have to do a lot of searching, maybe pay a gun broker, and pay FFL fees. So it might be a good buy even if the price is on the high side.

Thanks again,

Jim

i paid 500 for a new one; and you have to keep in mind that a used gun is being sold for a reason.

buyer didnt like it/need it -- hopefully
innaccurate or other problems -- hope not

worth saving 50 for the risk of it having problems? not to me! ill buy used but it needs to be at least 20% off new prices to be worth it to me.

btw mine is a "new vaquero" 5.5 45lc and love it. only thing i would change if i did it again would be to make it a 357. i didnt check 45 cost/availability and was unpleasantly surprised!

Primary determination of value is what is it worht to you. If it is what you want, price will mean little as long as is in your ability to pay range. That said, get it!

Finding exactly what you want can be difficult. It this is it, I think $450 is not a bad price. I've put several thousand rounds through a pair of stainless old Vaquero .45's. Had to replace a part on each gun, but for the most part they are bombproof. Given the ususal inspection criteria for a used revolver, I would not hesitate to buy a pre-owned Vaquero.

I had a friend of mine who wanted a two gun set-up; both guns were 5.5" stainless old model Vaqueros. I think he paid over $500 for a new one from a dealer, and around $450 for a used (LNIB) from a private seller.

2 years ago I paid $250 for a used color case original Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt.

A few months ago I paid $400 for a very lightly used Stainless New Vaquero in .357 Magnum.

$450 sounds like a lot of money for a used Vaquero BUT, if it's what you want and you feel the price is fair buy it!! BTW, I just love that Bisley Vaquero in .45 Colt, probably my favorite of the SA revolvers I own...
