Good Deals on Makarov?

You may have missed the boat on the Makarovs, unless a new shipment comes into the country new Maks are going ot be harder and harder to find. Two or three years ago Maks were all over the place at low prices, but now that the supply has dried- up dealers are charging more, the law of supply and demand. My advice, keep looking and be prepared to pay more then we did a couple of years ago. Good luck and I hope that you post soon about a new acquisition that you got a bargain price that proves me wrong.

The SOG Bulgarian Maks are only $20 more than what they were charging about a year & 1/2 ago when the supply finally dried up. They were $99 for 2 previously and $109 for one. They're only $20 more now. 10,000 were imported last fall, dealers probably got a fair amount of them.
Someone on the Makarov forum spoke to SOG last week, they had 913 of them so contact an FFL to order one for you or check your local gunshow.

EG Maks are a different story, they have gone up a good amount the past couple of years. I got one in excellent coniditon over 2 years ago for $170, that would be a great deal today.

Good luck finding an EG Mak anywhere, let alone getting a good deal. Last I heard, they were running over $200 or so. I nabbed mine for $175 in fall of 2001 and I love it.

It's the most reliable little thing!

I've love a Bulgie but right now the last thing I need to be adding is another Mak. I need a shotgun first. :)

SOG adds up:

129.95 BULGARIAN MAKAROV
10.00 Hand Pick
2.79 Charge Card charge
20.00 Shipping (Guessing, they don't say).
20.00 Transfer fee from your FFL

Total 182.74

I think I'll wait for the next gun show and hope someone has one for a good price.

Thanks so far for the replies.

Speaking of supply, I don't know why somebody in the US doesn't start making maks. I'd pay a good buck for a stainless one, for example. (FYI, I have shot a friend's, that's how I know I want one.)

Sure, I know the "Satin Nickel" Bersa Thunder is close, at around $250, but it's got the >40 parts of the PPK, rather than the more efficient 20-something parts of the Mak. Oh, well, soapbox off.

I'm told we're expecting another shipment of East German guns. I hope to get one if the prices are decent.

There's a 9x18 Baikal in the local shop with adjustable sights for $99, I think. If it's there next time, I might pick it up.

As to the issue of domestic manufacture, I would anticipate the cost of a US made piece to be prohibitive as compared to a "Combloc" pistol. Due to manufacturing (forging, milling, final finishing) intricasies, I'd expect a US made Makarov to go for at least $450. That would price it in direct competition with more established "premium" models, eg. Walther and SIG, ergo, no sale:uhoh: . Virtually any Eastern European pistol would be prohibitively expensive if it were to be produced in the West. Just imagine how much a CZ75 would cost if it were made by Colt or Smith and Wesson - - - $650 or so, I'd estimate.

Not exactly deep thoughts, but hey, I've been drinking:evil:

SOG costs

I talked to SOG two days ago. Costs for me to get one to Tx are:

$129.99 gun
$2.60 credit card
$14 shipping for one $17 for two and so on
$15 transfer
total $161.59

not bad, supplies in the Austin area are low. Having to check pawn shops since no gun shops have any. Good luck.

Don't anyone waste your money on the SOG $10 handpicked fee. The Maks are covered in cosmoline, you can't tell an unissued one from one that's got a little wear with all the gunk on them and they certainly aren't going to strip the cosmoline off to check them out.

Everyone on the Makarov forum that has gotten one from SOG in this batch (that came in last fall) has needed to clean off cosmoline so I assume all of them are. If you get one, be sure to take the extractor off, the cosmoline gets in there too. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with the Mak as you'll need to take it completely apart. It is a simple gun & is an educational experience.

SOG doesn't put the cosmoline on them, that was done it Bulgaria.

I got one last March from Ammoman.com, it was their last one and was unissued. It was covered in cosmoline too.

vanfunk,
Point taken, but, some of the parts could be cast to reduce price and a stainless Mak would be damn nice, reliable gun.

I like Makarovs with a smooth, deep blue finish...or nickel. I don't like dull-finished ones. With that in mind, the guns I have seen in the last year ranged from $175 to about $300 (for a nickel EG model). They were available at Texas gun shows all year - 2 or 3 at each show. I don't mind paying a little more to get nice-looking guns.
