I had a good experience today that I thought I'd share.

This afternoon I stopped by Dillard's here in Colorado Springs to check out their selection of light-weight sport coats. I was carrying my Springfield XD40 with two extra magazines, covered by a warm-up jacket.

When I got there it was a bit slow, so the gentleman who I believe runs the men's department greeted me and asked if he could help. I told him I was there to look at their stock of sport coats and he whips out his tape measure to take my measurements. He then invites me to take off my warm-up jacket and try on some coats.

I hesitated because I hadn't planned on discussing my carry status. I lifted my jacket slightly to show him my firearm and said I would like to but that I was carrying. Without blinking he said it was no big deal; that it was common for men to come in with their guns, including some guys from Homeland Security. He also told me he could tailor the sport coat to minimize the printing. :)

Long story a bit shorter, I freely tried on various coats and even discussed the various options with my firearm out in the open (which is completely legal in Colorado Springs). The people passing by either didn't see my gun or didn't care.

After this experience I'm definately sold on Dillard's and this gentleman. I'm looking forward to beefing up my wardrobe.

I think that gun=cop to most people. Probably didn't even enter his mind that you might be a private citizen.

Dillards in Tucson used to even freak when I carried in there as an armored crewman. Yikes. And this is a very open carry state.
I have often found that carrying a professional looking sidearm in professional looking leather, while dressed reasonably well, made that instant "cop" conenction in most people's minds. Now, wearing ragged garbage, packing a Davis 380 in a Rhino nylon rig might not get quite the same look...

That's great! I've heard so many good things about tailors in regards to concealed carry. It just makes me glad that there are apparently that many impressionable people carrying.

I think that that is a situation which is easily manipulated to force them to either be professional or intolerant and blatantly unprofessional. Personally, I would have done everything verbally, explaining that "Well, that's actually the reason I came here. I have a concealed carry permit and carry regularly. I was hoping that you could use your expertise to help me find a way to protect my family and look good at the same time."

... giggles, giggles, giggles...

"...see there's this bulge..."

It just sounds like another good situation to show people that kind and professional people carry guns, not just criminals.

Good work!

I suspect CC is looked upon as a good thing now in light of what happened at the church last year.

Chris, I believe you're correct. El Paso county already had the highest number of CCWs of any county in Colorado, but after the New Life shootings there have been stories of an increase in the number of people pursuing their license. It's unfortunate it takes something like that shooting to get people to wake up, but at least they are waking up.
