Hi folks! I wanna hear some opinions on the .22 mag rifles out there.

What are my options for a rifle under $250 in .22mag.

Seeing as its some of the only ammo left. (As well as .17HMR which I'm also really considering.) I didn't think it was a bad idea to pick one up in the near future.

Thanks!

Well you didn't say what the main purpose it would be used for for but I have two Marlin bolt guns, 773, 883 and they are excellent for targets or hunting. I am on the hunt (pun) for a Henry 22 mag lever action right now. I don't know if one can be found or not for a fair price and if not I can wait. But I am a real fan of the 22 mag round.

Both guns should be close to your price range. The Marlin 883 I bought a couple of years ago is the stainless/laminated model I found at a pawnshop in like new condition and got it for $140 OTD. That was a fluke. I don't think they knew what they had, But deals are where you find them.

Shooting steel targets at ranges beyond .22lr would be the purpose.

It may see some small game action too.

KickDD I cannot go back to shooting a 22lr after shooting a 22 mag the same day. The 22lr feels like a pellet gun after the 22 mag. I have shot 1" groups at 100 yards with my 22 mags. And done it several times over. A 22lr will shoot good groups at 100 yards but its takes a little more work to find ammo to do the job.

See if someone you know has a 22 mag that will let you shoot it. Its a good 150 yard+ rifle if you get a good one. the rugers are good but beyond your price restriction.

Marlin made a series of bolt, clip fed 22 mags that used to sell for about $175 a couple of years ago and i think they were called a model 25M. but don't quote me. They had hardwood stocks and were budget guns but still gave typical marlin accuracy. You might do some looking for one of those. That would be a best deal gun unless the frenzy has hit them too.

Thanks for the advice RatShooter!

I've seen some new model Marlin XT17's and XT22M's. I'm considering one of those.

Also, any good or bad things about Mossberg's .17 or .22M bolt guns?

The Mossberg Chuckster 640K can often be found for around $250. It is a very accurate rifle.

22 mag

More than your budget but I bought a CZ american in 22 mag than shoots
fantastic at 100 yds. If I do my part always under and inch with winchester andCCi ammo. Greta gun if you save a little longer

Savage 93. New they are under 300. I bought a sweet stainless bull barrel last year 260 with a free box of rounds. so 250. Its pre accutriger. I love the 22 mag. Now that I have one I am wondering how I ever got along with out it.

For the price range suggested, I agree with the members that suggest Savage or Marlin. I also think the CZ would be a great choice.

If you want to pay between those two, and don't mind a bit of a work to get it were you want it, the Zastava MP22 in .22 WMR ($330 ish) has very good out of the box accuracy. Yet, the bit of work I mentioned was finishing the stock, tuning the magazines, and cleaning up the bolt face for consistent feeding. I don't know if the other guns mentioned would need the tuning work needed on the Zastava or not.

Here are some pics from a range outing a couple days ago. It shoots sub MOA on a cold barrel and opens up to about 1.5 MOA once the barrel is warmed up. With good ammo, that is.

Chicharrones,

That's a good looking rifle.

I got a Marlin 25mn from a pawn shop a few yrs ago. Some fool had carved his name on the underside of the forearm and I was able to get a deal on it. I sanded the carving out and refinished the stock. Added a cheap BSA scope and it's a good shooting rifle. I've had a 25n (22lr) since I was about 10 or 11 and always wanted a magnum to go with it...

I have the Marlin 25MN. It's a great gun and can be found in your budget. I had a 783 Marlin sometime back and it was a great gun.
I know several people with the Savage models and they give them 2 thumbs up. Seems like all the ones i see have plastic stocks.
The CZ is suppose to be very well made and over all a great rifle. I can't find one around here in WMR and I won't pay Gunbroker idiot prices for anything.

I have a Marlin 782 I bought new back in 1989. It's plenty accurate, but the trigger is just horrible. I've seen several complaints about the older 78x series triggers. Not familiar with the newer Marlin 22 WMRs.

Find yourself a used Marlin 25mn. With an aftermarket trigger, its a 1 hole at 50 yard rifle. It also can be had for under $200 usually.

About a month ago I was curious about what you could buy in .22mag; Marlin, Savage, CZ, a few others. But nothing in stock to actually buy. Maybe get lucky at the LGS, but all the other suspects; no joy. I bought a Marlin 25N in '91, they also had the 25MN. I had to ask the sales guy what the difference was; more expensive ammo. Wasn't into the gun culture back then....

I also am in the market for a .22 mag. I've got a Marlin 25MN and just love it, but want another to leave un-scoped. I looked at GunBroker, usually they're swimming in them, but now you can practically hear the crickets. A half dozen lever guns and that was about it.

I gave $100 for a clean used Marlin 25M at the LGS. Nothing fancy, but it's a good rifle that shoots straight. $100 is just a little to the low end of average for a used 25M.

Growing up I always thought the .22 mag was more a pistol cartidge, but most all of us had semi auto .22 LR rifles, with the exceptions of my friends Win model 70 and my Win 52B bolt actions. The only .22 mags I recall seeing were pistols with interchancable cylinders, and no one ever bothered to bring them along with everyone shooting the .22 LR rifle arms.

Having said all that, it wasn't till the .17 HMR came around till the .22 mag came onto my radar as a practicable rifle cartidge; I mean lets face it, .223 in a Mini 14 ranch rifle, or a 22-250 is a much more suited cartridge for anything over what a .22 LR won't take down.

Personally, I just made the jump to a .270 Win bolt action rifle because the cartridge is versatile enough to cover varmints to big game; by that time we (the gang) had moved into reloading and the arsenal between us pretty much covered the gammit. And with all, and between all of us, not a one .22 mag rifle would have been considered.

Now today, would I consider a .22 mag rifle? No, but I might consider the .17 HMR if I was stuck to, or desired to, shoot at a rifle range. The .22 mag won't do anything a .22 LR can do out to 100 yards, and it won't do a better job than .17 HMR will do between 100-200 yards.

The heavier round of .22 mag does have more energy at yardages out to about 150 yards, but that is all it has over the other two offerings (.22 LR & .17 HMR). Out in the field, there are far more potent cartridges for any practicable usage above what a .22 LR won't do out to 100 yards.

You can not beat the ammo made for rimfire firearms chambered in .22 LR; just a fact of life. Putting yourself into a box between 100 to 200 yards, and only out to 150 yards with the .22 mag, makes little sense in a rimfire. At some point in my life I may find something that presuades me to feel otherwise, but this is my thoughts on the matter.

There is, however, a new following for both the .22 mag and .17 HMR cartridges today; and that could be a cool thing in some circles. If it was the new fad within the group of folks I has hanging out with, I could see spending some cash on getting into the game. I will say this though, they would have to beat my 52B hands down before I gave in.

I will share one last thought on the cartridges (.22 mag & .17 HMR); for punching paper at those limited yardages where they play, going to center fire cartridges can get you into the big leagues as far as cash goes.

Best of luck to you on what you come around to; I would probably do a Savage as a enter level into a world I had resevations about.

A few things you mention are exactly why I got a .22 WMR rifle, CarolinaChuck.

I already had a Ruger Single Six with the 9.5" barrel and I have much more fun firing .22 WMR out of it than .22LR. So, a getting a rifle in a caliber I already keep on hand is an easier decision for me.

For paper punching and plinking, I find the .22 WMR easier to hit far away than my .22LR rifles. Yes it is more expensive than .22LR, but I save my .22LR for 50 yards or less for the most part.

And as you mentioned, the .22 WMR is cheaper than centerfire factory loaded ammo ($10 to $15* per 50 for the .22 WMR). For the people that don't reload, .22 WMR can be had in consistently accurate factory issue such as the Hornady V-Max. Speaking of that V-Max, which is 30 grains, it gets the .22 WMR shooter in the neighborhood of the .17 HMR regarding velocity. Yet, you don't have to buy different cleaning rods, jags, etc. to get down that little bore.

There is a home for the .22 WMR rifle, but only if you don't already have your own solution or if you merely want it.

*before the recent panic. I've seen it as high as $20 per 50 now, yet it is still on store shelves!
