Good gun for 3-400 yard shots (coyote)

about 12 people in my family have killed a deer with the family's .243 Droped it dead

I am sure they have, but not @ 400+ yards most likely. No one is bashing the .243.

I have a heck of a coyote, hog problem at my place, and my LONGEST shot is about 600 yds... my go too's are my .308's in bolts, and I have a 7mm Sharp & Hart that is a money gun at those ranges... I also have a 30-06 and a 7 Mag that will consistently hit the mark at those ranges... but I have been shooting long range rifle for years... it is a science...

At 200 some of my most impressive kills on Coyote's have been with the .17 rem, and the .220 Swift... something just magical about 4000 fps. Drop them DRT.. (dead right there) absolute instantaneous kills. and no exit..

Personally, at the ranges you mentioned, something in 6mm or bigger to open... 6x45 minimum... the .243 is good, 6mm Rem, good, .270 yup.... 25-06 yup... .220 swift, yup with heavier bullets, 52 gr or better.

.223 will do the job humanly if you do yours... just about all the 7mm class, 7mm-08, etc.. will do a fine job...

In the 30 cals, the 30-30Win is generally not up to snuff in the accuracy department, and generally considered to be a 150 yd gun... but most any other 30 cal bottle neck should get you there... My preference would be the .308, but that is just because there are so many good bullet/gun combos out there today that will shoot well...

Speed and bullet size are nice.... accuracy is certain.... Preferably a combination of the three.. 1st can the gun print, 2nd can you make it print at those ranges... If you can get the bullet to the target, most any caliber with a well placed shot will do the job on a 40-50lb Coyote...

For coyotes out to 400 yards I'd be inclined to say a .22-250

Would be nice to also be able to deer hunt with it also. But trying to keep price under $400 though.

If you want a gun for deer too I'd probably get a .243 or possibly something like a .260 Rem.

Is $400 just for the rifle or does that include an optic?

I'd look for a Stevens or a Savage rifle. A stevens can be had for $320ish and a decent scope can be had for $175 or so. Not exactly you budget but I'd save longer and go over rather than buying a super cheap scope.

my dad killed a lot of coyotes with a ruger m77v 6mm its good to 300

another good option would be a 22-250 or 220 swift.

another friend of mine shot a 22-284 wildcat out of a 27" barrel. It was good to 400.

Now add 20 round Lancer L5 AWM magazines, a Gunfighter charging handle, a Bravo Company FA BCG (not illegal, not a full-auto part, just built better), and good ammo.
You'll probably want an optic too. May I recommend the ACOG?

The upper alone in your suggestion is double what the OP said he would like to spend...

The .243 and .25-06 are both good calibers, and Savage and Marlin both make bolt actions for less than $400 in those calibers.

The $400 makes this tough, you may try:

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/axis in .243
calibers to consider: .22-250, .243/6mm, .25-06.
Do you need a 'yote gun to shoot an occasional dog at 300+ yards, or a gun for open areas where 300-400 yard shots are common? a gun that will hit a 5" target at 400 yards is a fine rifle, that if you arent fantastically lucky will cost far more that the $400.
It might be wise to look at used bolt actions from .22-250 to .270. if you can find a deal you may come close to your price range. Good luck and be sure to take only ethical shots, know your rifle and your capabilities.
