good gun shops in DFW area?

There are many. What kinds of guns, what kinds of ammo, what part of the DFW area?

Try Ray's Hardware in Dallas. They have a very good selection and seem to carry most lines of handguns and rifles. From my experience, they will order anything for a reasonable price, but since they are a full line gun shop, I don't know if they fo FFL transfers and stuff like that.

I buy almost all of my ammo at Cheaper Than Dirt in Fort Worth.

McClelland's isn't too high, usually, and occasionally will surprise you with a really good deal. Selection (both guns and ammo) is great.

C&G Police Supply in Garland generally has pretty good prices. Selection is a bit limited and obviously LEO oriented. Check the hours before you head over and avoid dealing with Charlie's wife. She's hard to take.

Targetmasters in Garland has great selection (probably only Ray's beats them for selection) but prices are generally a bit high. I've bought from them on occasion--especially when I wanted something unusual that had just barely made it onto the market.

Ray's has the biggest selection in the Metroplex (to my knowledge) but not always the best prices. It's definitely worth a visit. They have some beautiful presentation pieces.

Ammo Depot in Mesquite has decent prices, but their firearms selection is unique (mostly milsurplus, black rifles & semiauto pistols). Ammo prices are usually good and ammo selection is usually surprisingly good.

Southwest Ammunition in Mesquite is pretty good for ammo & reloading supplies.

Ditto Ray's Hardware and Sporting Goods on Singleton near Downtown Dallas. Lock your vehicle when you go inside, though, and make sure you don't leave anything of value visible inside when you go out of line of sight of it. (Did I mention it's a bad neighborhood?) Ray's is a place that you have to experience. They have literally everything. It's something akin to Heaven but located in the middle of the 5th circle of hell. I love the place. They have an ancillary location, D-Ray's, just east of Preston on Forest Ln. Smaller but still impressive and a better neighborhood.

Also, check for The Shooting Gallery in the 6000 block of E. Lancaster in Ft. Worth. Terrific gunsmith next door- Matthew Brandt. Been a few years since I was by there but they should still be there.

If you're in Plano, I'd also suggest The Bullet Trap.

Regards,
Rabbit.

For ammo, go to a Big Town or Market Hall gun show.

For firearms & great pricing go to Bachmans Pawn & Gun (much better than Rays or anywhere else).

For ordering at really good prices and for doing $15 transfers, go here:

http://www.sportingarms.com/index.asp

A guy name Tom runs Sporting Arms and he can get you what you want and make you a good deal - check out his online search function.

I'll admit Bachmann Pawn and Gun is ok, but it's not a place to go if you want to browse more than 15 minutes. The prices may be good, but once you've seen it, you've seen it.

Honestly, I like reading Bachmann's ads in The Shotgun News as well as going to the store.

The great thing about Ray's is the browsing over the 30+ aisles of stuff that doesn't go bang. Oh, and there's a reason for the razor ribbon outside...right, tiberius?

Regards,
Rabbit.

you're welcome. When are you taking us to the range to shoot your new purchases?

Oh, and I assume you're probably a molecular biologist or PCR guru by your moniker, right? That's one of my areas of interest, among many.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I will BUY at Bachman, but prefer to shop at Ray's if you know what I mean.

Bachman has good prices and a good selection of personal defense and combat weapons but is not the best place to find the .22 revolver telomerase is looking for. I also don't like having to be "buzzed" in and out of a place.

Rabbit, It is called "Ray's Hardware" not just "Ray's Guns" afterall :)

>When are you taking us to the range to shoot your new purchases?

I might need to practice a little myself first (I haven't been to a range for a year, and that was with "someone" yelling at me to hurry up and leave after one magazine from my Mk II...) I'd love to go shooting more, though. Where do you usually go?

>Oh, and I assume you're probably a molecular biologist or PCR guru by your moniker, right? That's one of my areas of interest, among many.

I am the senior hunchbacked assistant in the Shay-Wright lab:

If this sort of thing interests you, you should read my article on green tea and cancer telomerase inhibition (it's only slightly out of date, and the latest experiments have confirmed my wild guesses; human tumors have been killed in nude mice with EGCG):

From your moniker, I assume that you inhabit poorly drained river bottoms and coastal marshes, and that telomerase is active in your somatic cells. I may be drawing too many conclusions with too little evidence, however. -hTERT

Barber Boats, on Harry Hines, also has a selection of guns. I haven't been in there for awhile, so I don't know about their prices or selection.
I do recommend McClellands.
These guys hit Bachman right on. Good prices but it is no place to browse.
B&S Guns in Garland also has good prices but it seems when you buy something, you are pretty much on your own. I know several people (former customers) who are angry at B&S.

Jim Hall

Ray's

Ray's has an excellent selection of just about anything you might want... prices tend to the high end however....but someone has to pay for the huge inventory... people are great there too.

Larry's in Lewisville has a smaller selection, but good prices and will order what you want and accept FFL shippments for a reasonable fee.

FWIW

I know about B&S guns. I live about 10 minutes from the shop--I left it out on purpose because I have a hard time explaining about it in polite language.

B&S guns employs the biggest pack of sphincters I have had the misfortune to run across.

From the woman who answers the phone in a tone of voice that lets you know in no uncertain terms that you just interrupted her nail job, to the rude idiots behind the counter who can't even properly field strip the pistols they spend 8 hours staring at each day.

I never go in but what I leave angry. The last time I was in there, I had to listen to one of the employees drone on about how he had told a customer to his face that "He (customer) was the stupidest @#$! that ever lived." while I was trying to look at the pistol selection.

It's improved in the last couple of years, but I have YET to find a person who's been in the shop who didn't immediately agree with me when I make the statement above (re. sphincter city).

I had one poster on TFL argue with me that they were really great guys, but I can only conclude he was an employee since he's the only person I've EVER encountered who felt that way.

Heck, I know people who are lifelong friends of the owner of B&S and STILL won't disagree with me.

Ok, here is a purely objective evaluation of B&S just to be fair.

Selection is great.
Prices are great.
You won't like yourself if you spend money in there--not even if you shower immediately afterwards.

Does anyone know if you can stop and browse at SportingArms in Lewisville, or is it just a warehouse type operation?

I know I could call them......

I think Sporting Arms actually maybe in Flower Mound. One of my CHL students did some biz with 'em last year. Yea, for initial contact, ya will need to call 'em ... ;)

Another local FFL guy (Chaz) ya might wanna know about is registered here at THR, ScoutSniper. He's forgotten more about riflery than some of us will ever know ... PM as ya see fit.

"The Bullet Trap" in Plano is pretty good, have a nice indoor range too. They rent 'em as well as sell 'em so I'm sure you could get a nice used gun there too.
