Hello,

I've been reading these forums for a few weeks now, and I like it here, so I registered and this is my first post :)

I do not yet own any firearm, but my wife and I have decided that it would be prudent to have some sort of home protection. I also am considering obtaining a CPL at some point in the future.

Anyways, not having ever fired any kind of weapon (unless you count BB guns and slingshots :) ), I am interested in finding some beginner training in my area. I live in SE Michigan, and was wondering if anyone here in my area could point me in the right direction.

Oh, and as an aside, do training classes want you to have your own firearm or can you take the class without owning one? I think I'd prefer to get some education beforehand so I could go to a range and try out some different weapons prior to buying.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me :)

Chris

Hi creitzel. I too live in south east michigan. I have done 6 years of martial arts training. For any form of combat, these guys provide the best training at a good prices.

www.livesafeacademy.com

There teachers are all highly skilled, patient, friendly and very good at what they do. Be forwarned, you will get roughed up a bit during drills in unarmed classes (no injury's, but minor cuts and bruises are possible), and likely get nailed with simunitions in the gun classes, but its all designed to save your life. To give you an idea of the attitude and quality of these guys, they train police, and insist any class they teach for cops must be open to cpl holders unless its a private class for a single agency.

1911JMB,

Thanks for the link :)

I checked out the site, and from their schedule it appears that they offer more advanced firearms training for folks that already possess a CPL. Do they also offer beginner training?

Thanks again,

Chris

Don't let their crappy web site or class list worry you. They offer extremely good training for anybody, including classes for absolute beginers, and if they don't have a class that specificaly meets your needs, they will happily give you private lessons. Again, these guys are the best. The teachers all have extensive backgrounds in combat, and they are keenly aware of how fighting works and what will enable you to defend yourself in the real world. And you get all that with a very friendly, down to earth atmosphere.

My suggestion is that if you are interested, you should call them for more info.

Edit: Something else I forgot to mention is that the principles they teach are based off of not only large amounts of personal experience, but most of the teachers were trained by Rex Applegate, who you may be familiar with. If not, he was arguably the 20th centurys formost general combat expert. If you are interested, a google search will yield more info about him.

Thanks again for the information, I will have to give them a call, and see about their class schedules and such.

Sorry, I'm in the Detroit metro area, so eaton rapids is a bit far (about 85-90 miles according to yahoo maps :) ). Thanks for the links, the first one is obviously a bit too far for me, but I'm in the process of reading through the 2nd. It looks to be highly informative about all manner of Mighigan gun related issues. Thanks again

Chris

Evan Marshall will be doing training at his new store and range in Midland. Do not have an open date yet, but would guess about March or April.

Visit www.stoppingpower.net for information.
