Good starter .22LR

I'm thinking about getting my sister a .22 for her birthday. I have a Savage 94 in .22 WMR and she loves to shoot it; however, I want to get her a regular .22LR. The thing is, there are so many options, it's hard to narrow a search down to what I want (so I figured you guys could do it for me! :evil:).

Here are my criteria:

- Price is ~$200, I don't want to go too high, no higher than $300, would prefer under $200, but with the market the way it is now, I'm not optimistic that anything that low will be decent quality... If you have experience with something in that price range, I'd appreciate it!

- Can be any type of firearm... rifle, handgun, revolver, etc. I'm more concerned with price than I am with type; however, since it's for a woman, it'd be nice if it looked decent. :rolleyes: Thankfully she's a tomboy, so she doesn't go for pink, but she would probably prefer shiny to not, silver to black, etc.

Take her to the gun store, and let her look around. She needs to see what fits, and what strikes her fancy, not ours. Marlins, Savage, Remington. They are all quality.

Sounds like what I'll certainly be doing once I have a direction to go in! Any suggestions of potential ideas in the criteria I'm looking for?
 
For rifles
-CZ offers the scout and trainer ~$330 (mas o menos)
they both look like hunting rifles (sporty) if shes interested in that
both are very popular for their accuracy. Comes with great iron sights and can be scoped easily (just need specific rings)

-Ruger 10/22 ~$200
Semi-auto, comes in all types of finishes/styles/colors/etc, decent->good accuracy, a infinte amount of aftermarket parts. Iron sights are okay. Can be scoped.

For a pistol
- Ruger Mark II - ~$300
good reviews, don't know too much on this one so if your interested look it up.

-For a more "tactical" looking pistol check out the Sig Mesquito
~$300-400

For a revolver: Heritage Rough Rider SA Rimfire Revolvers ~$180-280 (price varies on finishes)

If shes interested in a shotgun look around for a single barrel .410 or 12 gauge.


That's all I have for now. I know that most of the rifles I presented are more towards the $300 range. I will post more as I find cheaper ones.

Best bet for lower end (but high performance) firearms is looking through: Ruger, Taurus, Remington (used), etc.

I bought a used ruger 22/45 mk iii 5.5" bull barrel for $200 last night. Tack driver. If she likes shiny the Neos is pretty futuristic looking.
 
One of the best pieces of advice anyone can give you is buy used. A .22LR is good typically for over 100,000 rounds (at least in terms of the barrel) and provided it has been cared for properly. Myself, I prefer bolt action rifles. In terms of pistols, as already stated, the Ruger Mark II is fantastic. So is the Browning Buckmark. There are dozens of options (manufacturers and models). The first decision to make is does she want a handgun or long gun? From that point, you still have dozens of options.

as for long guns my first firearm was a used marlin model 60 and... I absolutely love it. Its appearance is along the same lines as your Savage 94, too.

my girlfriend likes it. Tube fed is nice cause she wont have to jam rounds into a magazine. It's semi auto, another plus to most. The quality is excellent, typically judged as superior to the more expensive 10/22. The price is fantastic.
 
Take her to gun store and let her look at different guns get an idea of what she likes. If she likes small and light its hard to beat the Marlin papoose. If this is her first gun consider a set eye protection and ear as well.

I bought my wife a phoenix HP but she likes my browning buckmark camper much better, but the Marlin papoose is her fav. The key is let her pick something she wants within your budget.

Maby just get her a gift card for a decent gun shop, most places offer them.
 
For a brand new shooter a lever or bolt to keep em slowed down but girls are generally less likely to spray from the get go...... as mentioned above, Marlin 60. Great plinker low cost however it's not real futuristic .
 
Depends what you think she will like best.

For $200 and in a pistol S&W 22A can be had right at $200. A friend has one. Its a good pistol, been accurate and reliable. Not quite the feel of either the Ruger or Browning pistols, but a bit cheaper and functions well.

For a semi-auto rifle I would push the Marlin 60. I feel they are a better rifle out of the box than the 10-22 and if you don't see her dumping money in upgrades I really think it stands out ahead of the 10-22. The 10-22 is an ok option and has a huge aftermarket but that's just more money down the line.

For a bolt action I think it is hard to beat the Savage MkII for the price. I would try to find either an FV or a BV as I really like their heavy barreled rifles. If you are looking for something that has irons on it though you may want to go with one of the sporter weight barrels.

Then there is the used market. Lots of good rifles available if you can find a store that stocks some of these older rifles. Gun shows are a good bet too.

That about as good as it gets for $200 that I am aware of.
 
Another vote for the Marlin 60. Out the door with a decent scope for under $300, and they're tack drivers out of the box.
